Growing up, I've always felt that the ability to create something was very cool. So when I discovered Industrial Design I knew immediately that this would be what I wanted to take up in college.

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

Growing up, I've always felt that the ability to create something was very cool. So when I discovered Industrial Design I knew immediately that this would be what I wanted to take up in college. It seemed fun and less intimidating than an engineering degree.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

My studio is called Build Republic. I felt that a long term investment in cultivating a good design culture within SME's and start ups was lacking. So I founded this studio with a name that encourages companies to invest long term in building excellent products, building cult brands and building a strong design culture within their companies.

Ambi Climate Mini Aircondition-controller · 10 spørgsmål

We designed the Ambi Climate Mini to learn and adapt to user behavior, allowing it to understand and optimize individual comfort preferences.

Your innovative approach to integrating artificial intelligence in the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller represents a significant advancement in HVAC technology - could you elaborate on how the AI learning process was developed to understand and adapt to individual user comfort preferences?

We designed the Ambi Climate Mini to learn and adapt to user behavior, allowing it to understand and optimize individual comfort preferences. But what sets it apart is its ability to also consider external influences, such as weather and humidity, and combine them with user behavior to create a truly personalized experience. Through machine learning algorithms, the device learns the user's daily routines, temperature preferences, and other habits, and adjusts its settings accordingly. For instance, if a user consistently adjusts the temperature to a certain level at a specific time of day, and it's also humid outside, the device will learn this pattern and automatically make the adjustment to not only meet the user's temperature preference but also to account for the humidity, ensuring the user's comfort level is always optimized.

The ceramic teacup and wooden coaster inspiration behind the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller is intriguingly unexpected - how did this concept evolve into the final design language that successfully humanizes such sophisticated technology?

The idea was to create a design that would bring warmth and tactility to a product that's typically perceived as cold and technical. We drew inspiration from everyday objects that evoke a sense of comfort and familiarity, like ceramic teacups and wooden coasters. We wanted to capture the essence of these objects and translate it into a design language that would make the Ambi Climate Mini feel approachable and inviting. We focused on the materials, textures, and curves that make these objects feel so welcoming. We used a combination of natural materials, to create a tactile experience that's both soothing and premium. The rounded shapes and gentle curves of the device are reminiscent of a teacup, while the wooden accents evoke the feeling of a coaster. By incorporating these elements, we created a design that's not only visually appealing but also invites the user to touch and interact with it.

The strategic engineering of ventilation through assembly gaps in the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller demonstrates remarkable attention to detail - could you walk us through the development process that led to this elegant solution for maintaining accurate temperature readings without compromising aesthetics?

We used thermal simulations to identify heat buildup areas and experimented with various ventilation strategies. However, traditional vents and grills didn't align with our goal of designing a product that's warm and welcoming, rather than intimidatingly high-tech. We wanted the Ambi Climate Mini to feel like a natural part of the home, not a sleek but soulless gadget. We realized that carefully engineered assembly gaps could provide sufficient ventilation while maintaining a clean and minimalist aesthetic. Through iterative testing and simulation, we optimized the gap size and placement to ensure accurate temperature readings.

Your team achieved an impressive balance between premium build quality and manufacturing costs for the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller - what specific strategies enabled you to optimize the internal electronics while maintaining the use of high-quality materials like real beech wood?

We focused on simplifying the internal electronics and streamlining the manufacturing process, which allowed us to allocate more resources to the premium materials and craftsmanship. We also worked closely with our suppliers to source high-quality materials at competitive prices, ensuring that the beech wood accents and other premium elements remained a key part of the product's design.

The multi-orientational design of the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller offers unique flexibility in placement - how did user research influence this versatile approach to product positioning and installation?

Our user research revealed that people have different preferences for device placement, depending on their home decor and personal habits. However, we also understood that the placement of Ambi Climate is crucial to ensure the accuracy of indoor climate readings and control of the air conditioner. By allowing people more options for placement, we're helping to ensure that the device is positioned in a way that provides the most accurate readings and effective control.

The development of the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller spanned from April 2019 to October 2020 - what were the most critical phases in this journey that shaped the final product's success?

There were three critical phases that shaped the final product's success. Firstly, the user research and validation phase helped us understand the needs and pain points of our target audience. This informed our design decisions and ensured that the product met user expectations.Secondly, the prototype development and testing phase allowed us to refine the product's design and functionality. We created multiple prototypes, tested them with users, and gathered feedback to iterate and improve the product.Lastly, the pilot production and quality assurance phase enabled us to fine-tune the manufacturing process, ensure the product's quality and reliability, and make any necessary adjustments before mass production.

The design language strategy established for the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller aims to maintain consistent brand identity - how do you envision this foundation influencing future products in the lineup?

The design language strategy is centered around creating products that are intuitive, user-friendly, and aesthetically relatable. We envision future products in the lineup building upon this foundation, incorporating similar design elements, materials, and user interface principles. This will create a sense of continuity and familiarity across our product lineup, making it easier for users to navigate and interact with Ambi Climate's products. As the product lineup expands and technology advances, the design language strategy will continue to evolve. We'll incorporate new design elements, materials, and technologies that align with the brand values and user needs. However, the core principles of the design language strategy will remain consistent, ensuring that products continue to embody the Ambi brand identity and provide a seamless user experience.

Your Bronze A' Design Award-winning Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller seamlessly blends technological sophistication with residential aesthetics - what insights about the relationship between technology and home environment guided your design decisions?

We recognized that the home is a deeply personal and emotional space, and that the products we bring into our homes can have a profound impact on our well-being and happiness. We designed the Ambi Climate Mini to be a calming and reassuring presence in the home, with a gentle and soothing aesthetic that promotes feelings of comfort and relaxation. I think we'll see a continued trend towards more seamless and intuitive integration of technology into the home environment. As technology becomes more advanced and ubiquitous, it will be increasingly important for designers to prioritize user experience and aesthetics, creating products that feel like a natural part of the home, rather than an intrusion.

The Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller's user feedback system takes approximately seven days to learn preferences - could you explain the technical and design considerations that went into creating this learning timeline?

We aimed to strike a balance between learning speed and accuracy. A shorter learning period might lead to inaccurate assumptions about user preferences, while a longer period might frustrate users who want to see immediate results. Our research suggested that seven days was the optimal timeframe for the device to gather sufficient data and make informed decisions about temperature adjustments. We considered factors like data sampling rates, algorithm complexity, and the need for a robust and reliable learning process. We also ensured that the device could adapt to changing user behavior and preferences over time.

Looking at the future of smart home climate control, how do you see the Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller's innovative approach influencing the evolution of user-centered HVAC design?

It will drive innovation leading to more advanced and user-friendly HVAC automation. We'll see a shift towards more integrated and A.I. automated systems that we won't even have to interact with.
