About Lagoon Concept Coffee Table

Lagoon Concept is a coffee table inspired by the landscape of Guatape Lake in Colombia. The solid wood base features layered, asymmetrical forms that suggest the surrounding terrain. A curved glass top rests above the base, shaped to recall the movement of water. Open sections in the glass allow parts of the wood structure to rise through, resembling mountain peaks. The form was developed through visual research, sketching and three-dimensional modeling. Lagoon Concept turns a regional landscape into a usable surface.

Design Details

Unique Properties
This coffee table is unique because it transforms the geography of Guatape lake into a sculptural form, merging cultural inspiration with functional design. Its solid wood base rising through a wave shaped glass top symbolizes the meeting of land and water. The piece stands out for its storytelling, the contrast of natural and transparent materials, and the combination of digital precision with handcrafted detail.
Inspiration
The inspiration for this design stems from the striking geography of Guatape lake in Colombia. It is intricate shoreline and vivid natural patterns guided the creation of a sculptural coffee table that reflects the harmony between land and water. Motivated by a desire to honor my roots, I conducted visual and topographic research to abstract the lake organic forms into a functional, artistic piece.
Research
This project followed a self initiated design research process aimed at transforming regional identity into functional form. The objective was to capture the essence of Guatape Lake through material and shape exploration. Using visual research, sketches, and 3D modeling tools, the study focused on user perception and emotional response. Insights revealed that nature driven narratives enhance user connection and design value in both cultural and commercial contexts.
Challenge
The main creative challenge was translating the complex geography of Guatape Lake into a balanced, functional form without losing its emotional and cultural essence. Achieving harmony between organic shapes and structural stability proved difficult. Limited technical references and material behavior for conceptual elements like sculpted glass required extensive experimentation and adaptation within digital modeling constraints.
Realization and Technology
This conceptual design was developed through digital sketching and 3D modeling techniques, using CAD software to shape an asymmetrical solid wood base that evokes the organic geography of the Guatape region. The tabletop is envisioned in thermoformed glass with soft, wave-like curves to represent water movement. Openings in the glass allow the wood structure to emerge through, mimicking mountain peaks. The design combines expressive form making with material contrast and precision detailing.
Operation and Interaction
The coffee table is designed to invite visual and tactile interaction. Its sculptural wooden base flows naturally beneath a smooth glass top, where gentle curves and openings reveal layers beneath inviting the user to explore its form from different angles. The raised wooden elements create a dynamic presence, sparking curiosity and emotional connection while maintaining full functionality as a central, usable surface.
Project Duration and Location
The project initially began in February 2023 in New York but was temporarily set aside due to uncertainties in its direction. Development resumed with renewed clarity and purpose in July 2025, also in New York, where the conceptual design is currently being refined.
