About Wood and Tree Poster

Wood and Tree adalah poster yang dibuat untuk sebuah seminar arsitektur yang diselenggarakan di Tokyo, Jepang. Tema seminar ini adalah pemanfaatan baru kayu, sebuah material klasik, dalam arsitektur modern. Poster ini menggunakan bahasa grafis modern untuk menyimulasikan gambar klasik lingkaran tahun pada batang pohon. Garis-garis dengan jumlah, ketebalan, kelengkungan, dan warna yang beragam diuji coba untuk membentuk pola tersebut. Hasilnya bersifat matematis dalam strukturnya, namun keindahan alaminya tetap terjaga. Poster ini berukuran 210 kali 297 milimeter. Poster dipajang di area pintu masuk, tempat pengunjung dapat mengambil selebaran berukuran kecil.

Unique Properties: It's a poster for an architecture seminar which is called "Wood & Tree" in Tokyo, Japan. The theme is about new possibility of application of wood which is a kind of classic material on modern architecture. So modern graphic language is used to simulate classic drawing to express annual ring. The main vision is mathematical but still can feel natural beauty.

Production Technology: Hundreds of annual ring's photo was collected as a reference. Adobe Illustrator is the main software to complete the poster.
Design Challenge: The hardest part is using mathematical graphic to simulate nature shape such as annual ring and expressing both aesthetics at the same time.
Research: The number, thickness, curvature, color, etc. of the lines have been extensively tested to express annual ring.
Inspiration: The inspiration is from annual ring. Wood is a kind of material without life. But different from other material, people can still feel vitality by the smell and texture and so on. The annual ring is the evidence which can prove it was lived as a tree. And the beautiful curve is intoxicating.
Project Duration: The project started in Aug 2018 and finished in September 2019 in Tokyo, and was exhibited in gallery of Myojyuji Saruein September 2018.
Operation Flow: It was displayed at the entrance, visiter could take the small flyers by themselves to understand the theme of the exhibition.
