About Long Time Karaka Pakitara

I whakaaweawe te Karaka Long Time e te toi whakamīharo o kirigami, he tikanga tawhito o Hapani e whakauru ātaahua ana i te piko me te tapahi pepa. Pērā anō i roto i te kirigami, ko tēnei karaka he whakakotahi i te toi me te ahumahi. Ko te tikanga tapahi me te piko ka taea ai te hanga i ngā nama Rōmana ki ngā taha o te karaka. Nā konei, ko ngā nama anō e pērā ana me te pūkoki atu i te ripo mētara, e hanga ana i tētahi tākaro o ngā wāhi whakaahua me ngā wāhi tuwhera. I hangaia mai i tētahi ripo konukura kua tapahia e te reitara, kua hoahoatia toitūtanga te karaka hei whakaiti i te para rauemi.

Unique Properties
The clock is made from a single narrow strip of metal. The cutting and folding technique allows for the creation of Roman numerals on the clock's sides. As a result, the numerals themselves seem to leap out of the metal strip, creating a play of positive and negative areas. The clock is positioned 5 cm away from the wall and appears to be floating.
Dimensions & Packaging
Size: 96.5X17X5 cm / 38X6.7X2 Inches

Production Technology
Made from a high-quality, laser-cut strip of aluminum, the clock has been sustainably designed to minimize material waste.
Design Challenge
Balancing the artistic aspect of kirigami with the functional requirements of a clock was tricky. Designing Roman numerals that can be cut and folded effectively from the aluminum strip while remaining visually appealing and easily readable poses a creative challenge.
Research
The study centered on the design aspects of the product, incorporating the development of numerous paper models and layouts. This entailed the analysis of dimensions, proportions, fonts, and the structural integrity of the forthcoming clock. The investigation resulted in the choice of Roman numerals 3 and 9 as the central design elements, chosen for their symmetry, which enabled the application of the Kirigami effect.
Inspiration
The clock was inspired by kirigami, the Japanese art of folding and cutting paper. In kirigami, paper is both folded and cut, resulting in a three-dimensional design that stands out from the page.
Project Duration
March 2020 - July 2020 Studio Wallaby, Yoqneam-Ilit, Israel
Operation Flow
The clock arrives ready to use and can be hung on the wall with two screws.
