Interview with Salvatore Solito

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have always loved art and design, and I always had the need to express myself through drawings, paintings, I love visual art and material, the design is the natural application of my creativity.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The brand giosolitodesign is direct, pure, essential as the children can be. It groups objects rethought in shape and size that surprise, despite being accessible and multifuncional.
What is "design" for you?
Design it's a perfect tool to tranform emotion into real objects.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
it's very difficult to classify a design, it's a very personal feeling.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
proposal for indoor and outdoor planters for hotel furniture company
When do you feel the most creative?
I have not a special moment, I think I do my best when I 'm very happy.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I'm so focused on my action that, sincerely, I'm not able to tell more.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I don't know exactly, I consider a good design if it astonish me immediatly, for me it's difficult to classify a design, it's extremely personal.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
from my point of view the responsability of a designer it's to be one step ahead, in order to understand the future necessity for a better world in aesthetic and functional aspect.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Today more than in the past, designers have to balance their work with the economic necessity of the companies, leaving really free to fly only few " concept designers ". In the future I see more technology and more functionality every object will be multipurpose.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
End 2011, Cremona, Yep, young designer exposition, probably on summer 2012 in tuscany... keep in touch for news...
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Italy, Tuscany, Maremma. I think it's easier to design if the beauty it's all around you. As my country it's well known for design, fashion and style, it's difficult to emerge, the economical period doesn't help...
How do you work with companies?
I like to follow all the process from first sketch to the final product, I think I can add something during all phases, merging creativity with the production necessities.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
The designer, from my point of you, have to be chosen by his capacity to design the object finding the fulfilling emotion of final customer, keeping in mind company inputs.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
The idea? everything and everywhere, from life, day by day, in the bathroom, looking at the sky. The best Idea it's the simplest, borns from reality, from humble seeing of the little things. The design? before by pencil and very quick, then watercolors, paints, autocad 2D, 3D,.. perfect, now the proyotype.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Pisolò bed by Denis Santachiara; Sottiletto, bed by Burtsher & Bertolini; Chopstick and Juicy by Philippe Starck; Small Dogs, toys, by me.
Can you describe a day in your life?
There is no day like other one, it depends, expecially how I wake up!
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Now I'm having fun, for the positive things, I hope to discover them soon.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I can't manage it, when I start designing normally I don't mind if it is night or day.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
about 1 month then depends on the client necessity, normally I would like to close project after 2 reviews.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I discover that toys for me it's the best way to express totally my creativity. Why? because I feel the pleasure of the kids when interact with my products.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
My aim it's to meet companies who have the same vision on design, giving me the possibility to realize my efforts and ideas.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Till now I produced alone, but I don't regret to merge my opinions with others.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I'm focusing on chairs in this period, using the same technique, starting from 2d and arriving to 3d multiplying shapes. Other solutions will be shown in my internet site.
