Interview with Ta-Chin Danny Lin

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I started drawing since I was in junior high school. When I was in the university in Taiwan. Even though my major was financial management, I still have highly interests in design. I started to learn digital software by myself and sketch often during my four years university. After graduation, I started preparing portfolio and TOFEL for Art Center College of Design. Now, I am in the last year for Art Center. I am especially good at developing the function and form through research, sketch, and 3D modeling. Looking forward to more opportunities to keep learning the skills and spirits of industrial design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am currently a Product Design major student in Art Center College of Design based in the Los Angeles, United States.
What is "design" for you?
Design for me is the expression of the life experience. Good design for me should always combine function and form well.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I am always like to develop the function in a design that makes people enjoy the way of using the product.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
The Dyson vacuum cleaner made by James Dyson is always my favorite one. The function and form are combined so good that make people just naturally attracted by its beauty.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
I had a chance to design a new concept of contact lens case for a manufacture in Taiwan. Besides using the traditional way of the contact lens case with two circles side by side. I stacked two circles up to the simple cylinder shape. In this way, I can also reduce the action to open the case. And there are more opportunities to develop different forms for contact lens case. This design is also shown in my portfolio website.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus more about the functions and feasibilities. Then I will focus on combining the form and function.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design should make people easy to understand and easy to use.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To give a better way to use and reducing the material of production.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I think the trend for the future design is simplicity. To combine the simple design and complicated function well is a tough process for all the designers now.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design style is simple at first sight. After observing the simple form, people can find out more interesting details inside the project.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Taiwan for more than twenty years and USA for four years. I found out so many different aspects in these two cultures. I learned my high persistence in Taiwan and expanded my creativity in USA. Even the learning process is not very active in Taiwan, I am still trying my best to broad my vision and skill in USA.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
It is always good and necessary to make a thorough research at first. Then I will start thinking about the problem and solution. After understanding the solution, I will begin to combine it with form and material. Last step is visualizing through drawing or 3D modeling.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
pencil / ball point pen / marker / Wacom tablet / Photoshop / Illustrator / InDesign / Keynote / SolidWorks / Keyshot
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
How did you come out this kind of structure that people can hardly figure out?
How can people contact you?
