Interview with Murat Gedik

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I started my design career as an architectural draftsman in 1991, and since then I have improved myself by contributing to projects and designs in various architecture and construction offices. I have awards in many fields such as architecture, automobile, furniture and futuristic design category. I graduated from Istanbul Aydin University, Architectural Drafting Program.
What is "design" for you?
Design is life for me. Even life itself, nature and world are a design. Design is what you and your life makes artistic and peaceful. For me, earth is the most beautiful design.
When do you feel the most creative?
I feel the most creative when I am in a peaceful place located especially in historical peninsula in İstanbul. It can be a cafe around
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I feel, it makes you proud to provide people and world a vestige, a work of art. And also responsibility. The responsibility for developing yourself
What makes a design successful?
The main thing for a successful design is that it shouldn’t be time-bounded, on contrary it should be beyond time. It has to be appealling in every time zone. The functionality and attractiveness come after.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Esthetic appealling actually. When I glimpse, I want to be affected. After that, the functionality comes. But I judge a design at first look with its esthetic design
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designer, as an artist, is responsible for leading society and widening their scope. Therefore, he should be beyond time.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Future design will alter with newly invented materials – light but durable and also environment responsible – and human requirements. In this extinctive world, we have to become more environment friendly. Design value depends on this responsibility. In addition, it is time for science fiction movies come true. Human started to think moving to other planets and maybe even living in water. Design field is affected with these intellectual and material developments.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Design exists from the very beginning of time. Thus we are born with inspiration, it is inside us. All I do is to look inside me and examine my feelings and peaceful places are the best place to find yourself. Therefore I meet with nature time to time and listen to myself and the inspiration comes.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in my home country, Turkey. Absolutely, my country’s cultural heritage affects my designs. I use some of our traditional motifs in my design. I live in a city decorated with art works of world-wide reputable Architect Sinan – known as Great Sinan. Sinan’s philosophy and methods affect me all the time. I have the chance to examine his works whenever I want. On the other hand, I find it difficult to make people accept extraordinary ideas and designs and also implementing those designs in my country.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Every designer has his own style. Companies must consider whether their expectations are fulfilled by this designer, his style or not
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Inspiration comes, sketching starts, function is given, analysis and researches are conducted. Materials are decided. After all, 3D modelling occurs.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Let your ideas free and be innovative. Discover the world and different cultures. Don’t let your inspiration die.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Being free-minded, imaginative, having esthetic pleasure, living beyond his time
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Waste paper, pencil - black, red and blue colour, calligraphy pen. As software 3D Max, Autocad and Photoshop. I listen new age and classical music to feed my muse.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Analyze, research and sketching require the most of time. I work systematically. If you plan your job, time management is not so difficult.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on design itself. Sometimes one day, some times one week is necessary
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Where did you graduate from? What is the fountain of your inspiration?
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I love high-tech and futuristic designs. As I mentioned above, I live beyond time. I respect to classical design but I don’t like it. Innovation and technical progress excite me.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I have a mixed use architectural concept in investment process now. I want to implement it. After I want to run my own design atelier and create other concepts.
How can people contact you?
Via e-mail and they can visit my webpage under www.mgd-studio.com
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
I wish there could be a technology that helps our dreams to transfer directly to a software as a drawing. I belive it will be some day, I hope I can see this technolgy.

Extended Interview with Murat Gedik

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I started my design career as an architectural draftsman in 1991, and since then I have improved myself by contributing to projects and designs in various architecture and construction offices. I have awards in many fields such as architecture, automobile, furniture and futuristic design category. I graduated from Istanbul Aydin University, Architectural Drafting Program.
How did you become a designer?
Design is in my soul, the feeling of creating something. There are some abilities and characteristics that the universe has given to people. I believe I also have design talent. Even if I don't do anything, I find myself drawing something with a pen and paper in my hand. Sometimes the shape I see in my dreams, sometimes a texture I see in nature affects me.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I was chosen to be a designer and I am very happy about it. Creating something is not something that can be forced.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I design architectural structures, futuristic structures and furniture. But I would like to design more architectural structures.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
They should be interested in art and culture, see and examine the works of great artists related to their field, improve themselves professionally, for example, if they are an architect, they should not leave hand drawing, perspective, photography, as well as technology behind. Must learn 2D or 3D software.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
In my opinion, a great designer is the one who creates timeless designs and will inspire future generations.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
First of all, being human-centered, sustainable and nature-friendly.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
A good design is unique and valuable for the value it adds to people, brands, places, countries, cities, neighborhoods, etc. For example, you design a building for a city that reflects the history, nature and culture of that city, and that building becomes the symbol of that city or even country. Or you design a logo carrying symbols from the brand's philosophy and the brand's country, and when you see that logo, you understand. I has become the signature of that brand.
What is your day to day look like?
I would like to design a futuristic city and spaceships for a new Star Wars movie.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
My imagination. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein
What is your biggest design work?
Santiago Calatrava / Turning Torso Tower building, Sculptural and extraordinary engineering technique. Salk Institute / Louis Kahn, Zaha hadid / Haydar Aliyev Center.
Who is your favourite designer?
Field Of Flower villa project. An architectural structure inspired by nature. The structure resting on the bearing bases of arch or semi arch character has a reduced impact on the soil,so allows the soil to enjoy rain and breathe in.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I recommend them to be good observers, to improve themselves professionally and culturally, to constantly participate in art and cultural events (historical places, museums, concerts, etc.), to read books, to listen to music, and to not stay away from nature. On the other hand, I also find it important that they use necessary professional equipments (3D tools, printers, etc.) and follow technological developments. And lastly, and most importantly, I recommend that they have their own style.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Everything the eye sees is a design. In fact, that the eye does not see, such as diatom. It is a marvellous design of God.
