Interview with Hiroyuki Morita

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
There is the background of my design works for the childhood period in Japan. In the days of 10 years old, the chair that I made for father was my first design. I still remember clearly a face when father sat down on the chair. Therefore I want to continue being the designer that happiness of somebody is thought about.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
For the name called "Studio Rope" there is meaning "let relations connect with each other beautifully, and strongly do the design such as a flexible rope". Our activity idea is to use the design to join relations together.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
It is the project that featured the theme of a problem of the forestry of Japan. The project is finished to consume the tree that they were not able to use from the rule of materials. I suggested it as furniture. I was able to send the suggestion for the problem that the present conditions happen in two international awards to a very important thing, I think.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
In the case of the product suggestion, it is necessary to consider it until its life. Furthermore, you should decide material to the life of the product. You must act to let a client understand it. In other words I think that I give priority to productivity and profit and should not use resources more than required.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I feel the domain where a design can affect to increase. A designer may join a policy. Furthermore, I feel possibility for the suggestion for the rising nation. I think that it is a role of the designers that anyone suggests the system that can produce value.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
It is display of international competition carried out in Tokyo. The next wants to approach furniture International Trade Fair in Milan and Stockholm.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
It is a rope for example my design-style. I let many relations connect with each other beautifully, and this is because it aims at strongly bringing about flexible value. Therefore, my design approach begins by investigating the spot.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Japan for a long time. Therefore, I will tend to respect traditional technique and resources. I am impressed with the design that brings the society value while respecting a tradition and resources.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
A designer needs enough communicative competence to understand the essence of the problem of things. That designer will be useful for your company. And I think that I can understanding it if I watch a portfolio and a work.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Yes. The approach changes by the situation. However, I lead suggestion after many case studies by all means.
What skills are most important for a designer?
I think that "intention" is more important than "skills".
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I spend much time for an investigation and the understanding of the partner. Therefore, it is only the end of the project basically to manage at the time when I am detailed.
What was your most important job experience?
It is the work that is all the most important. We should think so if us continue working as a designer continuously.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I am still groping for it. I want to enlarge the activity area a little more.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Usually I work alone. Sometimes I'm in the team where every specialty domain was mixed in temporarily.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Of course. I take the state that I can introduce one's design to anytime.
