Interview with Luka Krizek

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I wanted to be an architect from early age, I think I was amazed by the word architect as such. My parents were very supportive to follow my dream.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
IO Studio is small Prague based studio with big aspirations. We like to do courageous projects.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Wood, leather, clay, stone, but of course I like to keep up with latest materials too.
When do you feel the most creative?
In the beginning of project when there are all the options still open.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Excitement, energy and sometimes as well anger if it doesn't work.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Bad design is when the object is useless and does not surprise you, good one besides it works is as well original and surprise you with either new approach or new shape.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designer should think of people not his fame and of course ecological approach is plus.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I think future is bright, because we will have many new materials and technologies and design will be connected with science more.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
It was in Frankfurt, in Light and Building Trade Fare where I exhibited my last collection of lights.
How do you work with companies?
It depends from company type some are very easy and some very difficult.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My standard process begins with lot of thinking and brainstorming. It takes about one week and than I continue shaping and modeling from clay which takes the same time. Only after this I start use computer.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
My biedermaier big desk, josef Hoffmann chair, kubistic armchair, artdeco stand lamp and alluminium 30th bed from aeroplain.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like design furniture because it is very similar to architecture that I like very much.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Currently I finish interior project for international bank corporation with many atypical designed furniture. It is very courageous project.
