Interview with Federico Traverso

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
After graduating in architecture, I decided to work the Murano glass, collaborating with Japanese artists. After that experiences I realized that I would become a product designer. I then attended a three-year doctorate in product and communication design, at I.U.A.V., Venice.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
BrogliatoTraverso is a product design studio founded by Alberto Brogliato and Federico Traverso. By joining the different backgrounds and project experiences in Italy and abroad, we have developed our own personal vision of design. “We want our products to give emotions, telling the wonderful stories which we all need.” This vision and our passion for the "know-how", made that companies like Diamantini & Domeniconi, MyYour, Heineken, Plust Collection and several others decided to work with us, being mentioned in many magazines.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Really I don't know … it depends … every item can be special if there's a soul inside it
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
It depends to the kind of project … every material or technology can be incredible!
What makes a design successful?
too things: use, shape, beauty, brand's power, kind of market, period, economy …. but sure that the power of the idea is really important!
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
bring the beauty in society, applying the art to everyday objects
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Really there are too many checkers to understand the real future of design
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Milano Design Week, 2014, April Next one, as soon as possible, sure! :-)
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Vicenza, north of Italy. I feel my italian approach to design, sure! … but I use to travel a lot, so I love to live every new situation translating it into design
How do you work with companies?
It changes every time … but I love to work "with" companies, not "for" companies
Can you talk a little about your design process?
It' s very strange … and every time changes … I don't have a standard process
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
it's not so easy to suggest it …. but I think that the starting point is to observe every little thing of our life, in order to create a personal point of view.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
to be a designer is very difficult: there are some high satisfactions in a sea of sacrifices …. but it's the best job of the world!
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
the tools are not so important … it's the idea to make the difference … the tools change, good ideas remain.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I haven't yet learned to manage my time … I work everyday a lot, maybe too much! But I'm confident. I'll learn!
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Maybe "Everyday chair", because it was a great challenge to translate it into a product and finding a brand willing to invest in a so crazy concept.
