Fang Cheng Dong is an industrial designer, he was born in 1988 in Henan,China. He graduated from Tianjin University of Technology in 2011, and he had acquired a Bachelor’s degree. He works to create products which have vitality, only chases the purist and most practical design, and uses his full energies to understand the deepest demand of his client and transfer these demand into real product.

Interview with Fang Cheng Dong

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

I graduated from Tianjin University of Technology in 2011.My major is industrial design.After getting my bachelor degree, I have worked as an industrial designer for about 4 years.I love the beautiful things,I want to become a designer that I can create more useful and beautiful things for people.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

What is "design" for you?

Design can be seeing as interesting when it's for a product, while it will be more meaningful when you try to design for human being.

What kinds of works do you like designing most?

Everything,which need to be imporved.I love my work, I'd like to design more and more creative products for people.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

My first project is MingLing industrial sewing machine, it tooks more than one year. But encouragingly, this project win the Redstar Award in 2012.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

I'd like to create products which have vitality, only chases the purist and most practical design, and uses my full energies to understand the deepest demand of my client and transfer these demand into real product.

Extended Interview with Fang Cheng Dong

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

My major is industrial design, I finished the undergraduate study, got the bachelor's degree in Tianjin University of Technology, 2011.

How did you become a designer?

I believe the gift that God gave to me, because He want to see a better world.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

I chose to become a designer before I went to college, cause I want to create more and more beautiful things.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

Before one years ago, I am a product designer, in the past 4years I designed kinds of products like Induction cooker, fridges, washing machine, air conditioner and so on. But now I become a car designer, working for GAC Group in China.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

In my opinion, the different thing is you design for goods or you design for people.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

Good design is to be used conveniently by different people, but none can feeling that it has been designed.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

Good design give people a comfortable life and good mood, so we need it.

What is your day to day look like?

I want to design something that is related to people's lives closely, because that's what's important to human beings.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

A car, a wise creature, a friend. These three are the same thing.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

To consider more about people's lives, think like a child, I must convince myself at first.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

Mr. Dieter Rams, the last time I invited by Braun as a guest juror for BraunPrize, I meet Mr. Dieter Rams in Braun and I know more deeply about his design philosophy.

What is your biggest design work?

I like those things which are full of passion and good for our life. For example, Gogoro is beautiful and meaningful design for our life.

Who is your favourite designer?

For now, I wish my greatest design is an intelligent car, it is still in process :)

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

Design is an impulse, people want to achieve their goals, so they need design. Design is a tools for people to achieve their aims.
