Interview with Sebastian Dominguez Enrich

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
It began when I was a little kid, my family have always been related to design and architecture, and I was curious about how everything was made and how it works but the main reason was because it is a profession that you can work anywhere in the world.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The design studio Dominguez Sanz+Enrich is focus in architecture and in all design fields, it is the continue of the work of my father in architecture by adapting it to the modern times and opening it to other fields. You can know more in the website of the studio www.dominguezsanzenrich.com
What is "design" for you?
I can describe design as a tool to create new objects, ideas, business, anything that starts from an idea or a concept to the creation of that concept or idea.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Right now I am into furniture design and products that involved technology.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I have many designs I like but if I have to choose one is the iPod, because it change how the music industry worked.
When do you feel the most creative?
There is not a moment to feel creative, because it can come in the shower, in a dream, going to work , but if I have to choose one I think it is at late night.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The most important things to focus are to achieve the main propose of the design or object you are creating.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
The satisfaction and happiness that I am doing the thing I love. And i would not change that.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
The satisfaction that how your idea become into something real that you can touch with your hands, and it is not anymore in the paper as a sketch.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design is the one that achieve it`s main propose and is simple.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
As a designer you have to make a design environment friendly because after we finish using a design, you need to think what will happen to it and to educate the society.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is becoming something that we need in our daily life, thanks to apple, braun an other companies that invest in design people are starting to realise how important is design for our life, so it will become one of the most important fields and resource to companies to survive and evolve in this world that changes really fast.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I am trying to make my exhibition of the new brand that I am working in Milan design week next year.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My style is always trying to find simplicity , with the importance on the detail, and finding the elegance in the design. I have the idea that the most beautiful thing are the one you want to look at them and find that detail that make it different from the other.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
At this moment I am living in Madrid, Spain. I feel privilege that i have travel to different places and lived in other countries so I have seen and get involved in other cultures that are different form mine but cultural heritage influence in every person no matter the field the are you always make your decisions or yo act because is the influence you have.
How do you work with companies?
I try to get involve in the philosophy of the company and how the present and people know them.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Companies need to find a designer that his work and design style is more likely to how the company work and his philosophy.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My design process is simple, the first phase is the investigation of the company or client and what I am going to design, the market. The second phase is start drawing in paper making sketch, then 3d modelling and finally the third phase is the one where I make the design real.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Iphone, Mac Book Pro, my Moleskine notebooks, Eames chest lounge and Muji pens.
Can you describe a day in your life?
My day starts early in the morning I go to the gym and them start working a 9 and then finish at 10 in the night, sometimes I go out to meetings if they are not in the studio. Most of my time I am working with new design or projects I am working.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
I suggest young designers or upcoming designers to start creating your portfolio since day one and taking really good picture of your design projects, and to socialise with people and go to design events to get involve in the design world. Also not to be afraid to talk to people o important designers most of them will answer all your questions. Always be confident and believe in what you design and be good communicating with sketch and drawing not only by 3ds. Learning to say no and the last one buy books, lots of them.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
the positive thing of designers are that we create solutions to many problems, and create products to make life easier with things that we do not think that were possible, but in the negative side it is a profession that in many places is still underrated and think it is not important as other professions.
What skills are most important for a designer?
To communicate with drawings and to know how to explain design with few and easy words. Knowing how to say no and knowing the price and how much your work worth.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
My tools are really simple, I have my markers and pens, my notebook, my book collection, my computer, with illustrator, photoshop, indesign and rhino 3d modelling with vray for rendering.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
By crating different phases with the times that I have for every phase to not get stuck in a part of the design, sometimes you need more time in one phase so I try to not to spend more time in a phase than I need.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on the project, the size, difficult and many other things that affects or the project have.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
The most thing people ask is what I really do as a designer and how much do I work.
What was your most important job experience?
My first client I think because I realise that you have to know more things that just to be a good designer such how to behave in a meeting, learning to say no to projects that will cost you money or to much time, and affect other jobs.
Who are some of your clients?
Most of my clients are people that want unique design pieces and the ones who buy from my design brand.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Really enjoy working in my design brand because I have the freedom to create the objects I really want.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Most of my designs are develop by myself but other i have the help of my workers of my studio.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Right now is the new image of my design brand an placing it in a new market, also some architecture projects of building houses.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have been a designer for a couple of years now which I have design and create products that mainly for the field of furniture and accessories for the home of my clients and also for some work places.
How did you become a designer?
I think it started when I was a kid where I was always looking how things work, and how I could make them better or how should I do them. Also being in a house where creativity was an everyday thing helps too.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
the first thing is what is the problem, how I could solve it, and finally how the relation of function and how it look can both work together.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I think the journey and all the mix of emotions make every design unique, how you solve the problems you face, and the final emotion of having the final product after being in every phase it is an amazing thing of being a designer.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I think one thing that really help me is being a person that gets really involve in what I do and never stop until it is done also the work ethic my family teach me everyday.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
My future plans is to have a design brand that has stores in mayor cities around the world, and have the freedom to make all the design I want to make this brand unique.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I think every designer at the beginning should network everyday and get to know people on all the fields not just thinking that design events are the places to be, because its just a small part in the world, and you are missing lots of opportunities to have more jobs in design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I think you should never under value the price of your work this is a common error lots of people make, and its hard to get back to the point where you get the price you deserve for your work, also I try to make everything clear before I work with my clients and finally never be afraid to say no.
What is your day to day look like?
In my daily routine I try to have all meeting, and visit to the workshop to see how the products are made so i use the morning to have everything done so i have the rest of the day to focus on my design and my creative process.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
thanks to Internet its really easy to know new trends and what people is looking for. I am more of collection in products so you can evolve with new trends but always staying in the philosophy of the brand.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
My opinion is the more simple a product is better the design it is. If it doesn't need to be explain how it is used its been as designer we made a good job.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
When I achieve a balance in its function and its from the job is done.
What is your biggest design work?
My best design for me are my squeezer since it was my first design, tekant chair i really love this product and my thesis project earn.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Now I am living between Madrid and Mexico City, thinking to go to New York to get a new inspiration for my work so I can evolve in my work and get new things in my life.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I always believe that every person you worked with should have the freedom to tell what is right or wrong, what should change, their point of view or how would they solve it, in other words to not be afraid to say what is on their head.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I think every person has to give back so can leave a mark in this world. I mean if you have the chance to make this world better you have the obligation to do it, so we can make this world a better place.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
This award has open me a lot of doors and help me get more importance in the design field. And being named Designer of the Day make me really proud and happy that my work is liked.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
It comes in my family since my parents are involved in architecture and design, so it was always at home so that's where my passion came from, so I end up studying product design.
How did you become a designer?
I think was the idea to find solutions and create something new that doesn't exist, and the challenges it has.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I am mainly focus in the furniture and graphic design for real state projects, but trying to find new design ideas in the tech sector.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
The difference is creating something so simple and easy to use that you don't need to explain it to someone.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Because all the background it has be like that, the study, materials every step to achieve the final design.
What is your day to day look like?
I would like to find new design for the space race we are leaving, for Mars or the moon.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I always liked the work of Jonathan Ive, Marc Newson, Dieter Rams and Carl Hansen & Son. Also other designer too, but could say these ones are the most relevant for me.
What is your biggest design work?
Apple, mainly for the detail it has in every product, but now I taking inspiration in Japanese design and nordic ones.
Who is your favourite designer?
I could say spaceship, since they are taking us to the next step of civilisation.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Taking the time for looking around and knowing that all product has a relationship with design.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I always think about it maybe in the financial sector, since I enjoy numbers too.
