Interview with Charles Randall

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have always wanted to go into engineering and design, but I am still undecided in what field. The Air Deck was based of of the strong light weight design of a spider web. The structure properly supports the rider without large gaps.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am an individual designer who is completely unattached. My friend Parker Krueger and I worked on this project together.
What is "design" for you?
Design is creating something new and interesting from what you know and see around you, or from your own imagination.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
This design. It is by far my best design so far, and it is one of my only designs which comes from outside of school.
When do you feel the most creative?
I feel the most creative in the morning, but I have the most interesting and entertaining ideas at about 2:00 AM.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I like to focus on the concept of functionality, then aesthetics. After that I adjust it to try and keep the soul of the design and make it possible and effective to produce.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel inspired or frustrated, it depends on the problems I am facing.
What makes a design successful?
If a design changes any aspect of something to improve it in some way it is successful. The real question is how much improvement can you make in how many ways.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I always try and be open minded and think of all the possible pros and cons of the design. I try to take emotion out of the decision and use only logic.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
A designer should find ways to make things better. That can be more efficient, safer, cleaner, or many more things.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
It is shifting more towards concepts almost, and also towards electrical technology. I just hope that some old school features stick around.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I have not designed enough to have a clearly defined style, but I do like natural flowing lines as opposed to sharp geometry.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in West Lafayette Indiana. A very diverse college town with a large focus on engineering. It has very good educational programs, but also a lot of distractions.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I do not really know, but I feel that using emotion in a logical manner can really bring designs to life.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I found something that could be better, I thought of how it could be improved. I tried to find solutions to small problems, and I combined those solutions into one design.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Wake up, go to high school, train for whichever sport is in season, do homework, relax and maybe if I am inspired sketch a little.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
I am a very young designer so I want to say, anything is possible. All you need is hard work and a brain in your head.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Positives are you get to create things that could change the world. However, it is a lot of work.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Right now designing is taking a back seat to my studies. This was my first project.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
That depends on what it is and how much time you want to spend designing it.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I will be attending college at Purdue University and majoring in mechanical engineering.
