Interview with Andrew Carter

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
My interest in Graphic Design started from a very young age. I started to inspire myself from other’s work and familiarize myself with photo editing software. After having acquired certain skills, I started looking out for different inspirational sources. Most of the work I produce nowadays, are all derived from my dreams. I wake up in the middle of the night and sketch what I would have dreamt. The following morning, I get up and examine the sketches until I find something which captures my interest. I'm very innovative and I always try different styles so not to limit myself.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am a freelance designer based in Malta focusing on brand design and typography. I do work for different agencies, big brands and businesses as well as smaller start ups. My philosophy is to create quality work while having a good time doing it.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a universal thing that can be shared and interpreted by any race or age, so creating something different and inconsistent is always one of my goals.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Brand identities, UI design and any other work related to typography.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
There are countless designs that I truly admire, so this is a tricky question. If I had to narrow it down to just one, I’d have to say 'Shanghai Ranking — Typographic Illustration' by SAWDUST.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
If it is a personal project, I usually express my emotions and feelings through the work. If it is a commissioned work, I just enjoy working on it exploring new techniques and styles.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design is when one creates a unique and memorable pieces of art.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Most of the work I produce nowadays, are all derived from my dreams. Other inspirational sources are books, design forums and platforms (such as bēhance), and spending time alone hearing the echoes of my own thoughts.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
1. Sketchbook 2. Graphics Tablet 3. Books 4. Macbook 5. Apple Pencil
