Interview with Hisu Jeong

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Since I was young, I’d like to paint and make something with my hands. Because of the experience, now I could successfully become a design. As a designer, I hope all the things become designs.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We operate a tea company and we have a design institute with copywriter and director team inside.
What is "design" for you?
It could be expressed that a new dress for a product to make it sold.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Grand Comfort LC2 chair, it’s a comfortable chair as its name means ‘grand comfort’ . we everyday use chair whether it’s short or long. So I think that’s a great design for users’ comfort.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
We developed story-telling tea with great effort on the Royal Orchard.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I most prefer drawing techniques with a concept and it’s the core technique of our brand.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
As I proceed design or watch my design actualized, I’m feeling happy and alive.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I firstly consider the design is good for human or harmful for the nature.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Definitely design can be more and more comfortable and simple and it will be developed in a direction of human and nature friendly way.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
The 2015 Korean Tour Product Exhibition was the last exhibition and will soon be seen as a new entry.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I have many motivation from historical heritages and develop the motivation to my originality.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design approach is capturing the nature of a thing and connect past, present and the furue in a perspective. That’s my design style.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Korean history and heritage motivate me in my idea and direction and made me realize that the nature never changes even though the time changes.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Propose, market research, making design concept, making drafts, edit and fix, completion.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Two domains of time with my family and time in a job with my colleagues.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Having Many experience and knowing history. They are great power for designing motivation.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The positive aspect is having habits that looking things in various perspective and the negative point is I have to take a lot in my mind.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Usually I try to lead time. When I’m tired, take a rest, when motivated, work so I try to work naturally.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
It’s hard to except original questions like is it effective? Beautiful?
Who are some of your clients?
People who enjoys drinking tea or people who doesn’t enjoy much but still drinks on daily basis.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I am planning to design everyday product with decent convenience and fancifulness.

Extended Interview with Hisu Jeong

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I’m majored in visual design, and have been working in package design part for 10 years.
How did you become a designer?
Since I was young, I liked fanciful colors, and had curiosity in grocery package design. I think my curiosity is the motivation for me to be a package designer
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Unlike other school colleagues who didn’t have certain mind on the major, I had strong desire to be a designer. So after graduation, I entered a designing company to start building up my career.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I majorly do grocery package designs, and as a graphic designer I do all types of visual designs. I want to develop the ability of package design which is my main design career.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Though I am not a legend, but I hope all new-designers who freshly start their own career could develop their own unique work. After all, his/her own uniqueness could be his/her own brand.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer focuses on aesthetic sphere of design, but a great designer focuses on the user and environment of a design to make better condition for them.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Design is a convenience and aesthetic technique for all living things (human being, nature, animals etc) so to explain the value of design could be reflected by the goal of a design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design is a connection for people who need the design. Good design is aimed for sufficient message delivery, therefore, it’s necessary to utilize the best design with good amount of data analysis. Therefore I think it’s necessary to invest for a good designer.
What is your day to day look like?
The nature is a perfect design ever existing on the earth. Therefore, I’d love to get motivation from the nature to make a human-friendly design. I do not have a specific item, but if I had opportunity, I’d like to make a project based in the motivation.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I dreamed of doing recycle package design utilizing packages already played out.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
After all, it’s a communication between people. Communication is the best source for a design.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Actually there are a lot of great designers, I think a senior designer who taught me the impact of design on people and the nature was my master.
What is your biggest design work?
A designer from Slovakia, Lenkaczereova. He is eco-friendly designer who thinks the technology, environment and human first. I usually obtain good motivation about items and emotion from him.
Who is your favourite designer?
It’s eco-friendly poster which made me to start with the eco-friendly design. The poster delivered a message on the nature and at the same time it’s printed with soybean oil, so it was a precious project for me.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
A person can be a designer with power to deliver his original message when his own philosophy, insight on things and many readings are based on his design.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Probably I could be a vet, I still have good interest in the sphere.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
A design is a medium for a good consequence. People don’t design for bad.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
I always think my team gave the most precious and good synergy because I am alone could be fell in numerous situation for creating peremptory design.
