Interview with Bryan Leung

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have a bachelor’s degree in industrial design. I really enjoy devising strategies and will observe everything in life. To make dreams come true, I went on the path of becoming a designer. So far, I have enjoyed every minute of it.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We hope to improve people’s quality of life by incorporating feelings and emotions into their lives. We wish to create a warm atmosphere where everything is filled with wonderful emotions. I believe that people can live comfortably every day as well as embrace the beautiful experience that life has to offer.
What is "design" for you?
I think design entails strategies and arrangements, in which all factors are presented and utilized in the most appropriate manner. In addition, design may be described as a manifestation of thoughts and ideas.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I love designing touching products that enhance people’s life experiences, particularly products with precise strategic designs.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favorite design is juicy salif by Philippe Starck. His strategic success, rather than functional success, has truly impressed me.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus more on the aspect of strategic dimension, emphasizing how designs can be more precisely developed to better serve their purposes.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I anticipate the end designs being manufactured and enjoy the different possibilities that the process may bring.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I briefly immerse myself in the feeling of completion and soon look forward to developing new designs.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design involves making careful observations and arrangements as well as collecting as much information as possible. The key is to keep observing and putting such observations to use.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I consider whether the design is accurately and appropriately executed as well as the uniqueness of the design concept.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The responsibilities of a designer for the society and the environment are to create positive energy, make the society a more harmonious place, and facilitate sustainable environmental developments.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The design field will pay increasing attention to creating advanced designs, and design contexts and methods will become increasingly important in different industries.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
The design inspirations for my work come from my daily observations and me sharpening my perceptiveness. I have developed the habit of looking at things from different perspectives and experiencing, soaking in everything that life has to offer.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design style involves constantly thinking and feeling what’s around me as well as identifying popular trends and finding an opportunity to meet such trends. To me, experience is opportunity.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My design process involves soaking in every experience, making investigations, being ready, and waiting for the perfect opportunities to put what I know to use.
Can you describe a day in your life?
A day in my life involves making new discoveries, having new experiences, and engaging in interpersonal interactions.
What skills are most important for a designer?
The most important skills for a design are the ability to empathize and see the nature of things.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It really depends on the size of the design project. In general, the more time that I have, the better the design products become.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I enjoy design strategies the most. In addition, I love people-related things because they enable you to find different possibilities and development potentials.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
My future plans involve setting up my own brand or taking part in more design projects. My goal is to identify advanced design prospects for the various industries.

What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
Even for people who come from the same background, they may still be able to find new possibilities and opportunities through different designs. Good designs facilitate competitiveness and developments.
What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?
I would design outstanding items that have lost their popularity for people I would like to thank.
What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

All the life experiences that I have had and the people I have acquainted myself with have made me the designer I am today.

They should consider more than just the visual parts of the designs; that is, they should take into account the atmospheres as well as “stories” of the designs.
What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?
My future design projects will include producing designs that meet people’s daily life needs as well as things that they can “experience” repetitively and in detail.
What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?
My ultimate goal as a designer is to transform Taiwan’s OEM technologies into a luxury brand.
How does design help create a better society?
Design helps create a better society by allowing people to enjoy their daily lives and enabling smoother and friendlier interactions between people.
What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?
I am currently working on using the most appropriate method to find the optimal strategy, and then perfectly implementing such a strategy.
Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?
Memento, because it was a design that I created to show my appreciation to the person I wanted to thank.
What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?
I would like to see designs being used in different industries and that people paying attention to their design experiences.
How long does it take you to finalize a design project?
It really depends on the size of the design project. In general, the more time that I have, the better the design products become.
When you have a new design project, where do you start?
I start by having an in-depth understanding of the design project and soaking in the experience.
What is the role of technology when you design?
Technology helped me elevate my ideas and product texture to a higher level and, most importantly, it allowed an ice-cold material to evoke a sense of warmth.
What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?
Colors, materials, and ambient offer an experience to the five senses and serve as a link between stories.
What do you wish people to ask about your design?
I wish them to ask me questions that even I myself have not thought about.
When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?
I think about how everyone can be immersed in that deep and satisfying experience.
Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?
My ideal design partners are those who have a thorough understanding of different design techniques and those who have an interest in business strategies. I believe that a good team will bring out better designs.

How did you develop your skills as a master designer?
I develop my skills as a designer by constantly picking other people’s brains, by thinking from a variety of perspectives, and by sharpening my perceptiveness.
What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?
My favorite color is Red. I love a study room where I can exercise or think quietly. I like the air in the fall.
What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?
I tell myself that there will always be thinking methods or contexts that have never been introduced, and that new experiences will always be a possibility.
When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?
I found out that I would become a designer when I realized that I kept thinking from different perspectives and coming up with ideas that nobody else thought of.
What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?
I think people will pay more attention to thinking, and that realizing those thoughts will become much easier. In addition, ideas that are not being valued now will be realized in the future.
