Interview with Vishal Vora

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
My inclination towards design comes naturally, Each one of us born with some natural flair for me the art is one of them, I used to draw mythological characters of Indian Gods and Goddesses since childhood and all these characters symbolize something, because we all live by stories since childhood we grown up listening stories. We love stories naturally, and art and design is a medium to express our emotions, it can be any form of art, be it design, dance, music, literature or performing art. I still remember when I was a kid I used to collect empty matchboxes because of some nice printed graphics on it, I don’t know whether I was aware or not at that time that this kind of work is done by some expert people. I had a huge collection of match boxes at that time just because of beautiful graphics, and as time went by, one of my school teacher told me that you should pursue in field of art and design. After that, I started preparing for formal design education and I did my Applied art from I.S. College of Fine Arts.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are a brand, product and packaging design boutique, specially focused on perfume-cosmetic industries for international markets. With a constant eye on the latest trends and material innovations, our creative services team provides clients with cutting edge concepts for branding and packaging programs. We engage with each client to understand what the packaging program needs to convey and how it aligns to the company's overall brand objectives; as well as required budget and timeline parameters. With some of the most experienced talent in packaging design, our creative services team brings depth, unmatched skill, and utmost attention to detail to every project.
What is "design" for you?
For me design is a medium of telling a story, the very purpose of design is to tell story whether be it packaging, product, art or any form of design some way or other, it tells a story; if it is not so, it is dead. For me Design is a form that functions, Design is a form that awakens your senses, Design is a form that creates dialogue, Design is a form that triggers an emotion, Design is form that lifts your mood,. Design is form that makes you ponder, Design is form that inspires you, Design is a form of crafting poetry, Design makes this world more livable, Design is not a static thing; it is constantly moving, changing and ever evolving univers.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
It is very difficult answer this because every project is a special one, we have designed more than 200 products and packaging. The best part of any design project is its process from the genesis of idea to the realization of product. if I have to name few of our projects that we are proud of, they are Tool Box, Bonita, Swano, Espada, and Prakrishi range of organic products and many more.
What makes a design successful?
For me Successful Design is a fusion of Art, Idea and Execution. When I say ART, I mean aesthetic and visual presence of design. Any design, art or design is consumed by our eyes first. That’s why I believe understanding the science of eye candy is very crucial in any design process, IDEA stands for addressing the problem, be it a functional, emotional, environmental or user-centric. Meeting the objective of solving problem as per requirement is very important as well. EXECUTION makes or Kills the design. There is a term in design called “lost in translation”, when an ART and IDEA works but the end product has not come out the way it was planned and the visualized the entire exercise becomes useless, So all these 3 elements have to be in tune with each other to get the desired result; that’s how they collectively make good and successful design for me
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration comes from the nature, human aspiration and life itself, we perceive the world through 5 senses, keeping eyes and ears open, seeing the world with different lenses and curiosity that is the thing that separates the designer from rest of the world.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
As a designer, I strongly believe your design has to have a hook and strong character that hold the attention and triggers the emotion of viewer or consumer.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Mumbai (India), India has a most diversified cultural heritage in the world. It's a nation within the cluster of nations with cultural diversity which is united by one core essence. As a designer, I feel it has broadened my horizon and made me see the world with a new perspective.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Having worked for last 18 years I’m still leaning as a designer, I believe one have to learn to reject our own ideas without any bias to get to next level and evolve as a designer.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Biggest positive thing is that you are a designer, a creator. Negative thing is that you are not a very good designer, when you are not a good designer there is more scope to become good designer so technically there nothing negative but only learning.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Thank You. We are so honored and grateful to be the recipient of A’Design Award and Competition 2020 PLATINUM. It is very exciting when your work is appreciated globally. It gives you immense pleasure and inspires you to do more exciting work in future and it comes with responsibility to raise the bar each year and set new standards, so it’s a very exciting journey.
