Interview with Etem Deniz TEMUCIN

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Because almost my entire family are artist, designer or architect so it can be said that I didn’t see any other proffesion. I was interested in social sciences when I was in high school but eventually that’s the point that I came now.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am still not working for any company. I am still educating in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like to design small objects. I think that there is a huge difference between objects that people like to show in their living areas and objects that which they entered into. For example cars, boats, etc.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Raymond Loewys pencil sharpener. I think forcing an object that much for the trend which he adopts shows a designers sagacity. But this is just an example. How can say that this one is my favorite whilw there the design history is full of great objects.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
I designed a closet when i was intern, unfortunately it was never manufactured.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I like using fabric materials in my products. It is definitely warm material to use.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
İ feel more curious. While i was creating a product, there can be a difference between how i designed the product in my mind at first and the product which i designed end up with.
What makes a design successful?
In my opinion, a product which is safe for anyone even though it’s not selling good or doesn’t liked by someone is still successful.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
If a product make harm to itself or anyone who is using it I judged that an insufficient product.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
In my point of view, using minimum material sources and using these sources with minimum pollution and providing maximum benefits with minimum loss.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
It is obvious that we are going to use high technology in the future however it has to be always made by human beings.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
The most important criteria which is affecting me to create a product are biomimicry and iconic objects. (hourglass, telescope etc.) Besides that listening expectations of people also affecting me to realized my design.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I am trying to blend modernist style and oriantel style. I am also searching an innovator, elegant and exotic design language. Generally, ı am trying to get main shapes of my products from nature itself and iconic objects.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Turkey, My countrie’s designing culture developed by old civilizations such as Hittite, Byzantium, Ottoman, etc. I can easily say that Turkey has a great design potential however It has no unique design culture yet.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
It always starts with a blank paper. I like sketching without asking anything to anyone and without researching. After the researching process I am taking opinions of target customers, and then I started to add things into my first sketches.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Logitech g502 mouse ('cause of ergonomy), Casio sgw-100-1v watch, Ibanez gio guitar, Hilti nail set case, Wacom Sylus stand.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Brain of a designer always remains fresh however the body always rebels.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
In my point of view the golden rule is “never harm to anyone or anything.”
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Graphic tablet, Adobe photoshop, Rhinoceros, Keyshot, Fusion 360, Autocad and blank paper. My inspiration usually come from city itself and history. I can’t find inspiration from magazines or etc.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
There is no time limitation in my working hours right now. I always time for working so it is hard to make an inference for that. However, I can easily say that working at nights is the best option for me right now.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on projects. Some of them can be finished in one week, some of them can be finished in four months.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like to design objects that people can wear. Also I like to design objects that people want to put it into their houses. I believe that these kind of objects makes people to internalize.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I always worked with my own until today but I want to work with a team which including engineers, designers, advertisers, etc.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Right now I am studying at Mimar Sinan Fıne Arts University from where my father is graduated from. Almost my entire family members are artists, architects or designers.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I both coosed it and kind of forced to as any other job would hard for me.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I would rather designing things that people can wear or can put in their homes.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Good designers products sells well, great designers creates icons.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
As long as products which are not make harm to anyone else and be good to the nature, good designs will always come up.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Every designs value add to the designer. A good design is a designers pride.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Luigi Colani, Raymond Loewy, Phillippe Starck, Dieter Rams, Joe Colombo, Hartmut Esslinger, Fran von Holzhausen are the first ones that comes to my mind.
What is your biggest design work?

Who is your favourite designer?
My coffee machine is the one that I was most satisfied with which is one of the reasons why i sent it to this competition.
