Interview with TimeTec Computing Sdn Bhd

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I love art since I was young. I’ve always been intrigued by art and it translates in the love of my job. Design and art are inseparable and to me, learning process has never stopped even long after I left my college. I earned my Diploma in Graphic and Computing from Center Academy of Art (CAA), Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and I’ve always knew that design is my destiny.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My company manufactures and sells biometrics products for the global market since 2000 and recently we ventured into cloud computing solutions. The unique thing about my company is, we use a lot of design to conduct our business. We provide various websites (and I meant VARIOUS) for our clients and resellers to access to and gather information without them having to meet us to conduct business. Our design studio is all the time busy and running because the need to upkeep the information in our internet ecosystem is tremendous, but we love it.
What is "design" for you?
Apart from providing audience with information, design evokes emotional response, giving you an idea and attachment about a product/service even before you even see/experience the product/service. That’s how Apple and Samsung create an uproar whenever a new iPhone is about to be introduced to the market. And that’s why a woman drooling over a Louis Vuitton handbag.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Website design, I enjoy experimenting on how a particular effect can be applied to the page to make it look more lively.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Revamp the official website of the company, a major task for me.
What makes a design successful?
To be able to carry the meaning without having any text explaining it.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Whether I’m able to understand what the design is trying to tell.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Design provides artistry and aesthetic values to the world. A great design concerns about all aspects of society and incorporate that to improve the quality of life. I give an example, a great architect must think about the convenience of all users of a building including the less able and the handicapped, they have to use sustainable building materials and provide great design to beautify a city. A clever design makes people stop, think and give back to the society.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Malaysia and im proud of it because it is a multi-racial country, and it is rich in culture, rich in heritage and rich in its artistic values.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Content or relevant information will be provided to me and sometime discussion is needed to further understand a project. I will then conduct my research to deliver the best that I could provide and finally I will come out with a prototype to be approved before everything go live.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Constant self-learning, something that you wont learn from any academy.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Do the research, prepare everything and understand the requirements before you start, this can reduce a lot of disappointments.

Extended Interview with TimeTec Computing Sdn Bhd

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I love art since I was young. I’ve always been intrigued by art and it translates in the love of my job. Design and art are inseparable and to me, learning process has never stopped even long after I left my college. I earned my Diploma in Graphic and Computing from Center Academy of Art (CAA), Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. To learn something new these days, we don’t need to be formal about it because there is an abundance of information out there and I always upgrade myself by self-learning.
How did you become a designer?
I’ve always have the passion in drawing and from there I knew that design is my world.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
This is definitely my choosing and I never regret it a day in my life.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I do generally web designs and with the new techniques and technologies going at us at a rapid rate, I want to learn and to input more great effects in my work.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
They should always have the passion in what they are doing. Without passion, there would be something missing, no matter how pretty the design is.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer is someone who can design a nice artwork, but a great designer is a person who look at designs not only from its aesthetic value but also from its practical angle and how the design can influence the lifestyle and the way we contribute to the world.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
To me when you are able to deliver a massage with minimal explanation and appealing to the eyes at the same time, then it is a good design.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Again self-motivated and self-learning, a great planning and research before I start any of my project.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
That never occurred to me because I believe this is what I meant to be.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Apart from providing audience with information, design evokes emotional response, giving you an idea and attachment about a product/service even before you even see/experience the product/service.

The CEO and COO of the company have always provided me with a lot idea and feedbacks during the process.
