Interview with Edhuard Zverev

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am inspired by warriors and vikings,strong - spirited people, who are free of rules. I became a designer because I always had a desire to draw and then I found jewelry making. For me- it lets you create a pencil drawing in real world.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Frangue - means "free" from Gallic language. And I always relate to wolf.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
It's jormungand ring. It's a composite ring - consist 3 parts and symbolize a serpent from Scandinavian mythology, which encircles the world.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Gold. I like to work with metal, create new forms and shape it. Also really like sculpting.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Pride, and warrior like passion. And a trance like state when I draw.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Metal work, shaping and quality. Originality of the idea behind.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
It will become simpler and to the point,using allergy- free materials.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
At a local exhibition center in Saint-Petersburg. I'm planning to exhibit abroad.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Sharp shapes,rough edges, old school designs for men with premium quality. Big sized jewelry, like in old times for warriors,Vikings.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I was born in the Northern part of the country and was always influenced by vikings and wildlife,nature of North of Russia.
How do you work with companies?
I'm just starting to. I'd like to collaborate on projects.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Looking at works and ideas behind design, quality - then decide whether it meets their desires.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I get a feeling, vision, inspiration and it live in my head a little time,then I start to create a design on paper.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I get up and check my messages for new orders. Then usually I contact my production team to check on what stage jewelry production is. Then I work as a fitness trainer part time. And in the middle trying to make a name of this brand in Saint-Petersburg city. Late at night I draw new projects and create collections on paper.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Positives is that you create your own art. Negatives are not enough orders to make money for new projects,it's unstable.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Ability to draw,imagination, knowing shapes and forms and how to create a balance. Of course knowing materials you work with and technology of jewelry making.
What was your most important job experience?
Working as carpenter. Also casting metal while studying at University.
Who are some of your clients?
Men with their own business, athletes, women who know what they want and ready to pay for good designs.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Drawing on paper. Because it's a magical process to create by drawing on paper.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Getting people to know Frangue in the world. Exhibit and show my works. Creating new collections.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Right now I work with talented 3D designers,who create stl files out of my drawings.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
My new collection that I create- it's about Adams apple. The bodies,that shaped out of eaten apple.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I studied PETRGU (University of metall manufacture and repair) ,Petrozavodsk,Russia 1996 and I create jewelry and accesories for men/
How did you become a designer?
I like to create designs for strong,independant and free people (mainly men) and I always get visions of designs in my head that I want to create in reality. I once asked a person to teach me his mastership in jewelry and he refused- that created a fire in me to become the beast designer and be better than him.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Find their passion and create more of it. Always educate theirselfes in technology and material they work with.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
A good design-good quality. The best design - originality,the best quality and mastership.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
A value is that you can buy it or ask a designer to create it for yourself and wear it your whole life if this is the best quality. Be the only one in the world with this kind of jewelry piece.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I have my unique trait of shape and edges,my own Z in designs (first letter of my last name).
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I can't really remember cause I don't awe of someone,just their works/
What is your biggest design work?
Maybe weddind rings by Bvlgary and rings for men by other big fashion houses.
Who is your favourite designer?
Actually one I made and got a silver award here. Seahorse pendant. Original idea,tha its for men.and a gemstone that radites the whole pendant inside out.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
A vision that you get and then come around to create a jewelry out of it.
