About DesignNest

Allocacoc, an industrial design firm, stands for setting a different standard. One of our top selling products is the PowerCube: An award-winning product in multiple categories, amongst which the coveted Red Dot Award for Industrial Design. We are also helping other designers to develop their ideas into products and launch them into the market through our crowdfunding platform called DesignNest. DesignNest is a crowdfunding platform that offers designers a unique opportunity to develop their ideas into finished products that are launched onto shelves worldwide. In contrast to traditional crowdfunding platforms, DesignNest provides a complete solution and support for designers from sourcing, production and assembly, as well as distribution and sales. Designers experience the entire process while having the chance to collaborate with other designers in an open environment. There are already two successful projects with products that are on their way to stores worldwide, namely DAX: ‘the wallet with a trick up its sleeve’, and Levit8: ‘the flat folding portable standing desk’.

Interview with DesignNest

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have always wanted to be a designer! I spent six year gaining industrial design experience at Dong Hua University, graduating in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. There are various problems encountered in people's daily life, and a lot of problems can be and should be solved. Solving problems is the goal for us as designers.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Allocacoc was founded in 2010 by Arthur Limpens and Yixia Jiang, two Industrial Design graduates from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Allocacoc stands for setting a different standard. They are also helping other designers develop their ideas into products to be sold in the market through our crowdfunding platform called DesignNest. This is a one-of-a-kind crowdfunding platform that provides design knowledge, sourcing, production, and assembly together with distribution and sales.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Simple products that people often use in their daily lives, which will improve their lifestyle.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MUJI Wall-mounted CD machine. It is a kind of metaphor in an interactive and visual perspective, which makes people feel that music flows like the wind.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Happiness! The fact that my product can bring convenience and fun to more people.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I believe that industrial designers have the mission to solve a variety of problems, to help people have a better life, a better environment and even a better world. Making a better product is a one of the best ways to solve the problems associated with people daily lives, and I enjoy it very much.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Hongkong Lighting Fair ,Spring 2017. HongKong ,CN. I would want to hold my next exhibition anywhere if my product received an invitation.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I am very sensitive to the various problems encountered in people's daily life, and I feel that a lot of problems can be solved. I want to solve those problems in the way designers do.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
In fact, this is my first mass production product, I am willing to use “concise” and “practical” to describe it.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
2016,Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering,DongHua University, ShangHai/China.I had Six years of industrial design learning experience at Donghua University.
How did you become a designer?
I am very sensitive to the various problems encountered in people's daily life, and actualy I feel that a lot of problems can be solved and should be better resolved.I want to solve those problems in the way designers do.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I choose to (be a designer), this is one of the biggest choice that I have made which always made me excited and happy.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Now I'm doing design of some small products that people often use in their daily lives.I wish to design more of those type which can solve problems in people's daily life , those type which can bring people more convenience and happy. Especially type of Human caring, environmentally friendly, animal friendly design.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I'm not legend...Just a normal young Industrail designer.Suggest is be kind and be senstive to life , and actively thinking and solving problems which you encountered
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Maybe it is similar to the difference of to design products and to solve problems by design products
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Can solve problems in a better way than before.Cause good design can help to make people a better life , a better environment and even a better world .
What is your day to day look like?
I wish to design more of those type which can solve problems in people's daily life , those type which can bring people more convenience and happy. Especially type of Human caring, environmentally friendly, animal friendly design.For example, auxiliary equipment for people with disabilities,Products that improve health problems and quality of life in poor areas,Consumable substitutes for degradable consumables,ect.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
there are so much project I dream to...I had made a list of them, and the latest one is a kind of special toy for children.
What is your biggest design work?
MUJI Wall-mounted CD machine,It is a kind of metaphor in Interactive and visual perspective,which make people feel that music is blown out like the wind
Who is your favourite designer?
LightCube maybe,Light environment is so important, that it should be able to be easily improved and adjusted to adapt to a variety of scenarios' needs, so that it gives users a better living experience. I tried to give a simple and flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments.and that is LightCube.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Maybe...Handicraft makers?Racing rider?Athletes?There are thousands kinds of life that I might try.
