Interview with Dongjoo Jung

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have a quiet long story about my background. I studied stage design, and worked as stage designer, and prop designer for drama and short films. After serving military service, my desire was to fill out more about art history and philosophies. So, I decided to study in the States. I started majoring in art history, but one and a half year later, I wanted to do more creative things not like writing and reading. And I made another big decision to major in Interior Design. I started studying interior architecture, and I got into it really. Then, after I went to grad school, I got interested in furniture design. So, I took some furniture classes, and made some hand crafted furniture.
What is "design" for you?
The meaning of Design for me is to consider others or society or our future.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I just love designing anything. I just enjoy thinking about any ideas if I can make it even better ergonomically or socially.
When do you feel the most creative?
It may sound very weird, but when I take a shower, I get a lot of ideas.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I always try to keep being well balanced. I have a lot of things that I have to consider during designing, such as holding concept, materiality, ergonomic aspects, and so on.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I am always enthusiastic when I design something. I feel I am alive.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
The first thing that I consider when judging a design is how much it is user-centered.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
There is no legislative power for designers to change society or environment better, but I do believe that just tiny idea of designer has a great power of changing of the world.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was July 2018 in NYC. It was my first solo popup exhibition about my furniture series.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I do not try to get some specific inspiration, but I am always to try to be open-minded, and positive for everything. I do believe that everything is connected in the world.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I currently live in NYC. Compared to other cities in the States, the biggest benefit of living in NYC is there are a lot of cultural things, such as galleries, museums, architectures, and so on.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac Pro, Marc Jacobs Translucent Tote Bag, and Paul Smith Card Case
What skills are most important for a designer?
Both visual and verbal communication skill is very important for a designer.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
I try to use as much as I need. Tools are one of the most important things during designing since it helps to transfer and express from my brain to physical results.
What was your most important job experience?
I used to work in Lissoni Inc which was established by Italian Designer and architect Piero Lissoni. Before I joined the firm, I already knew him and respected him a lot. I learned about what minimalism is exactly from him.
