Interview with Ming-Hong Tsai

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
My major in university was Literature. Mainly Chinese and Western Literature. One day when I know that design can change people’s lifestyle, I put my heart into design until today.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Han Yue Is an elegant and poetic name in Chinese. It means the pearl upon the Milky Way.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like Commercial space design the most. It can achieve all kinds of possibilities.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I love to see new materials being added to the historic space. The beauty of inter grate old and new elements that achieve functional and splendid is a masterpiece.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I like try to process natural materials to see how it will become. Normally it’ll give me unexpected and surprisingly outcome.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
In my opinion that functionality and beauty is the basic of design. The more I care about would be the use experience.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
To be honest, quite calm. I was more excited when the work during processed.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
How to improve and elevate life’s quality at the same time while taking care environment and not wasting life style.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
The details of life. You pay more attention the more interesting things you can find. These are the inspirations of my creation.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Nowadays designers shouldn’t be limited by traditional styles, such as Modern, Simplicity, Classical…etc. But try more different style to collision and fusion that create another result.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I was born in Taiwan and I live in Taiwan. Here in Taiwan we have numerous cultural integration. So the most important lesson of my life is how to make ‘Taiwan Aesthetics ‘ outstanding from numerous cultures.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I’ll immediately have many possibilities of design to analysis and consideration in my mind while entering the new space. Usually I’ll choose two or three options to continue.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
In my opinion that young designers have well-understand and variety of design. But they can have more communication with site in order to make their work more completely.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Communication. It’s very important to know how to communicate with client and suppliers.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I was graduated from Department of Chinese Literature. I was part of the team to implement TSMC and Starbucks which are international brands. These work experiences help me a lot.
How did you become a designer?
In order to get to know design, I learn carpenter first and at the meanwhile I learn basic painting and masonry. It became the stepping stone of my knowledge of materials in the future.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
First of all, I’ll try to understand what is the purpose of the space and the users’ expectation. Then, to consider what kinds of style could be operated in the space. Finally, try to make a innovative work.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
My high standard demands and not easy compromise is my personality. However, my advantage is I’ll try my best to communicate.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Be more determined to create, work hard on communication and keep learning.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Be more determined to create, work hard on communication and keep learning.
What is your day to day look like?
If I don’t have any meeting with client during the daytime in office, I’ll be a real me. Simple and casual.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Instead of keep up with the trend, I think to creat a trend is difficult but more important.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Every time you review the project, you don’t feel it out of date that is a necessary requirement and comfortable experience of a good design project.
What is your biggest design work?
‘G-Space’ is a 300 square meters hair salon. I present the divided of space and materials combination. Also I transform art work into this space. Although nobody would notice it I still really proud of my design.
Who is your favourite designer?
Louis Kahn, Carlo Scarpa, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Wang Jian, and Huang Shang Yuan who comes from Taiwan.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
To visit art museum, book shop and listen to music is very important for my life style.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Eastern people aren’t used to cooperate with each other. I have different kinds of professional partners to work with. I think we’ll inspire more energy and we can expect different design.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
We had contributed to NGO’s design project, and I wish we can help more people in the future.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
In my opinion, A’ DESIGN AWARD & COMPETITION have more open minded to different design styles. In the future, it will definitely influences human life style.
