Interview with Miro Nazarian

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
When I was a kid I was so interested in painting and drawing. During the teenage years, I started to make handicraft and some of that crafts were tiny house models. That house models ignited my passion to be an architect and design houses and that is my background in art and design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Kartez Architects is an architecture and interior designing studio which I had found with my two friends. at the Kartez we practice delivering a good-finished and unique architectural designs and interiors. Kartez(ՔԱՐՏԵԶ) in Armenian means "Plan".
What is "design" for you?
To me design is, making decisions based on knowledge of classic art (composition, drawing, sculpting) and chemistry(materials).
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I really like to use concrete and metal in architectural or furniture designs.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Aesthetics and functionality are the most important aspects which every designer must focus more.
What makes a design successful?
The most important thing in every individual design is having the idea. A greater idea you have, a greater design you will have.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I think the most important aspect of a design is the idea. Then the way of introducing the design like the shape and form, technologies, colors etc. which are the character of a design
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers are like leaders and were always one step ahead of the society and this is the reason why should designers think and care more about society and environment.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I have never participated in exhibitions before but now I am thinking to participate exhibitions prepared by A'Design Award group for showing my latest work the 'Saguaro' cloth hanger which has been granted Bronze A'Design Award 2017-2018 in furniture and homeware category.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I hate chaos and this holds me in the way of simplicity. I always tried to find things in very simple ways and also design and create in very simple forms with less chaotic shapes.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Tehran, Iran. Like every country in the world, culture plays very important and effective role during the process of thinking and designing and I can not say that culture does not affect on my designs but I try to find a way to combine traditional and new ages design styles.
How do you work with companies?
As a designer, I am always interested in work and communicate with people and companies.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Always I start with reading, collecting information and recognize the problem. this could take a very long time and plays the most important part of a design process and then I check all possible and impossible forms and that I start to design.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Mostly I use pen and markers for sketching ideas and then I start to complete it in CG software.

How did you become a designer?
I am really interested in shapes, colors, forms, and materials and these all are the main reason which led me to design.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I chose to be an architect and designer when I was a kid because I was so interested in buildings and constructions. And I chose to study architecture and become a designer.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I design interiors nowadays and it makes me think more about furniture and because of it, I love to design furniture more.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Actually, I am not a design legend but, young designers like me or students should read more and practice. Because the combination of these two will open their minds and let them dream and design more.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer thinks about good things but, great designer thinks about great things.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
The idea and the function are the most important thing which makes a design good or bad.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
there are so many aspects and benefits behind of the idea of each individual good designs and they should be supported by people because designs are for making better living spaces for people.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I got inspired by many legend architects and designers like, Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe, Mario Botta, Alvaro Siza, Charles Eames and Philip Stark.
