Extended Interview with Seokwon Han

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have a degree in Visual Communication Design from DANKOOK University in Korea. I have an MF in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in USA and a PhD in Design from Seoul International University in Korea.
How did you become a designer?
I think I always like creating and finding solutions, and I naturally get interested in various design fields.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I am not a legend. I would like to say to young designers that you need to do your best to finish your work without any regret. After finishing your work, you will be able to find your own progress from the best work.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I do not get the meaning of 'good designer' and 'great designer' actually. I just focus on designing to hear WOW with the love an passion for design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design is to contribute something for a better life, because design is for people.
What is your day to day look like?
I would like to make data visualization with Virtual Reality, for science education tools about evolution of the earth.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I would like to learn about code editors, so I can make generative typography with them.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
My secret recipe in design is to research many references for ideas.
What is your biggest design work?
I like the work of Stefan Sagmeister. His work with conceptual graphic reflects his great design process.
Who is your favourite designer?
My favorite work is Water for Life poster series because I spent so much time to create creatures with splash water images, as well as they can be expended to create various living things in design.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I like to travel any places and interested in visiting bookstores.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I think that design is to solve a complex problem with an aesthetic and simple solution.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My best supports were my professors and my friends. I learned a lot of things from everyone I've worked with.
