Interview with HuaWei Dai

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am studying architecture and art. I have a kind of obsession with beauty and I hope to integrate art and architecture to serve the society.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We have been working in architecture and interior design for nearly two decades, with a range of hotels, government projects, public spaces and commercial projects.
When do you feel the most creative?
When the experience is accumulated enough, the technology is not a flying fairy.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The rational use of lighting, the correctness of the moving line.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
It is the first consideration to meet the convenience of the end user.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
After fully understanding the format, using the principles of interior design to expand different design areas, the future of design should be a win-win cooperation.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
In December 2018, the Chongqing Mass Art Museum did not consider the next exhibition time.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
The combination of tradition and innovation, I hope the public will not forget the traditional culture. Respect history and culture and explore the use of new technologies and materials.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
In Chongqing, China, culture has a lot of influence on my design. The material culture in China is growing, and the demand for users is also growing. The demand for designers is constantly improving.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Companies should judge the potential value of designers and develop designers with creative and independent thinking skills.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Starting in anticipation, the process is happy and the results are satisfactory.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
1921 hot pot restaurant, pub, resort hotel, children's palace, museum.
Can you describe a day in your life?
When listening to music, you will be happy to see the scene you like.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
The expansion of technology, the accumulation of knowledge is very important, and it may not be design-related knowledge
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Using knowledge creation, getting self-identification is very positive, and I am full of doubts about the future. I think this is negative.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Rest without creation, doing other things, creating with inspiration.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Undertake non-native design work and want to travel more in the field
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
A hotel in a valley, similar to the project of Anzhen Hotel, is very challenging.

How did you become a designer?
I hope that beauty and architecture will be integrated to serve the society.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I think that we can consider the problem from the perspective of the user and make a good design that can be recognized by most people.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
First of all, there should be commercial value, and good design can create commercial value.
What is your day to day look like?
I will find a piece of land and design a house for myself. It is energy-saving and environmentally friendly, has an innovative design, and has ecological crop closures.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I like technology programs and learn a lot of non-professional knowledge, which is very helpful for design.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
First propose the idea, then think of ways to solve and implement.
