Interview with Arvin Maleki

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Since my childhood, my family has had an Iranian hand-woven carpet factory for many years. At the time, I was very interested in the drawings they drew for the carpets. With all my being, I loved colors and patterns, and I learned about them. In later years, in high school, my professors strongly encouraged me to go to an art university. I was very interested in studying computer science at university. After graduating from college, I worked as a designer next to my job. Finally, I decided to use artificial intelligence, which was my specialty in industrial design—a combination of art and technology. I can say that this decision has been a turning point in my life.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My design studio is a wonderful world where I work. I have very creative, enthusiastic, and capable teammates, and we have done a lot of successful projects together. The most important thing is that we enjoy working and creating together.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a dynamic phenomenon. It is converting the mental concept of aesthetics into a visible phenomenon with measurable attributes. Then it can be said that sciences such as mathematics and geometry also have the concept of aesthetics. Design is the creative imagination of science.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I like to design digital and intelligent instruments. In fact, I think artificial intelligence and technology bring tools to life and make them more practical.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
For the first time, I designed packaging and organizational identity.
When do you feel the most creative?
I always think about design, but green places make my mind excited.
What makes a design successful?
In my opinion, every design is beautiful and successful, but the important thing is that it meets the latent needs of society to be considered.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Increasing the life`s quality of the people, in other words, making life easier.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I think we need a futuristic view of design. Artificial intelligence technology and applications are rapidly evolving and expanding. Their use in life is not only inevitable, but one day life would be unimaginable without their use.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
The last one was: Design that Educates Awards, Germany and the next one would be Exhibition of the A’design award competition.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Designing for the future is my favorite style. I believe that design should be simple and technological. The use of new technologies is my favorite routine.
How do you work with companies?
I always try to do my best, so companies have always trusted me. This has led to a lasting agreement.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
The portfolio is the best source and reference of a designer's background, but it is crucial how the designer interacts with the employer. I prefer to work with a designer that considers order not only as a simple task but also as an essential issue.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Making ideas, cultivate ideas and Consult with the team, Implementation process design, and finally Performance.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Going to my companies, study, writing, design, watching the film, and music are the regular activities I do.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Design requires creativity, deep inner belief, and study. In art, which is a straightforward yet complex phenomenon, we need to know what art is and what we are looking for in art. Melt and create your mind over and over again. So much, so that artistic creation takes over part of our subconscious mind. But the most important thing is to learn the basics of art. A good designer can think well when he can draw a line professionally. It takes thousands and thousands of times to practice drawing lines and geometry. Whenever you can draw a circle with your mind instead of your hand, you can imagine creative phenomena. The design has a ladder. You have to go up all the stairs one by one. Design, color, volume, and geometry and implement them with all the details.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Being a designer is a gift in life. As a designer, you can take a new look at the world. Art is inherently dynamic, and it is challenging to bring that dynamism into practice.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
From my point of view, the design could change the human`s view of life and makes dreams true, if it is creative, simple, peaceful, and intelligent.
What skills are most important for a designer?
The ability to turn the ideas we have in mind into a feasible plan.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I have a detailed plan for dealing with ongoing projects. Because we work as a team, we try to have precise tasks. Because design is a complex process, we try to analyze in advance what is going to be done and how.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
A certain amount of time cannot be raised. It depends on the design and its complexity. Of course, sometimes it is possible to come up with more ideas so that more time will be needed.
What was your most important job experience?
Working as a designer for three of the largest factories in Iran.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Designing new projects. Let's take a new look at the design and make life easier for people—an extensive development.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Yes, I sincerely believe in teamwork. Consult and challenge each other to create a new design for me is very exciting and efficient.

Designer of the Day Interview with Arvin Maleki

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
The best thing I can say is that I am an industrial designer. I first studied at university, computer systems architecture, and artificial intelligence. New technologies may seem a little strange, but I think design can make technology a very useful tool for all people. In other words, make life more naive and more generous for everyone. In my design style, I always try to use technology at the heart of products.
How did you become a designer?
I think we all have a road map inside us. It is our inner and subconscious desire to do our best. After studying computer architecture and artificial intelligence at university, I decided to move on to industrial design. This migration required a lot of effort and perseverance so that I could gain enough knowledge and experience in this field. But in this regard, I have always tried to achieve everything that helps me do my best. But my best friend helped me make that decision. She had an exceptional understanding of life. She was passionate about life and worked hard and bravely, but at the same time, she enjoyed life. She told me to be the best; I had to pursue my inner passion. In design, aesthetics, ideas and product performance are very important to me. In addition, I try to put technology at the heart of my design.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I feel an inner joy. The best feeling I can have. I really enjoy creating a new idea.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Zaha Hadid is my favorite designer. Her prominent and stupendous designs are very inspiring. She uses the art of engineering in her design. I studied computer science and artificial intelligence at university, and I'm delighted about that. This gave me a different perspective on design. I can imagine the design I want with the technical details I want. And maybe I can dream more creatively.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Designing new projects especially futuristic and digital concepts. Let's take a new look at the design and make life easier for people—an extensive development.

What is your day to day look like?
Going to my companies, study, writing, design, watching the film, and music are the regular activities I do.

I have my own criteria for evaluating design. Aesthetics, usability, and ideas. These principles are very important to me.

Extended Interview with Arvin Maleki

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
I've studied artificial intelligence, but I've always been interested in putting technology into practice. On the other hand, I used to design professionally but in the margins. Eventually, I decided to pursue industrial design as my main occupation because I had a strong passion and motivation. That's why I studied and experienced in this field professionally.
What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
It is an undeniable fact that art is a part of life or even life itself. I have studied artificial intelligence and I have articles and books in this field. But I came to the conclusion that I need to be able to bring technology to life creatively and functionally. So I decided to pursue industrial design professionally.
Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?
Forced art will never be a creative phenomenon. Art and design require innovation, creativity, awareness, and belief, and all of these are in stark contrast to mandatory art. With great enthusiasm and knowledge, I migrated to design one of the most attractive and up-to-date academic fields of study. Because it is the art of design that transforms life and puts technology into practice, man will not enjoy existence without the pleasure of art, which is in his instinct.
What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
My most significant interest is the futuristic design and the use of artificial intelligence in industrial design. In my view, the world is moving toward more and more use of artificial intelligence in human life. So in the art of design, we need a practical leap and a change of perspective. We need to understand how artificial intelligence will make human life easier and more enjoyable, and be able to accept its use as part of the art.
What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?
What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?
Intuitive understanding of art, artistic wisdom, knowledge, and attention to detail.
What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
My artistic evaluation begins when the design has both aesthetic criteria and applicability. Imagination is very different from artistic creativity. Also, good design should be different and similar. It must have a specific policy, but it must not sacrifice principles to be different. Then it can even create a new movement in art.
What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
Good design affects the quality of human life. This is the most important reason. It may even change the dreams of the people and governments. Increase human capability and the possibility of taking advantage of the potential of the universe. Good design allows people to live more comfortably.
What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?
I would design educational tools for disabling peoples, especially blind.
What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?
Effort and dreaming. Study everything related to design and analyze it.
What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?
Blackhole absolutely. Of course, I still prefer it because I tried to follow all the principles of my design. And of course, it was my first big creative challenge.
How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?
Design and practice every day. Let's have creative dreams every day and try to redesign the phenomena in our way.
If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?
I have not been a designer. I tried it. I was an artificial intelligence specialist.
How do you define design, what is design for you?
Design is a dynamic phenomenon. It is converting the mental concept of aesthetics into a visible phenomenon with measurable attributes. Then it can be said that sciences such as mathematics and geometry also have the concept of aesthetics. Design is the creative imagination of science.
Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?
I should say my best friend. She had an exceptional understanding of life. She was passionate about life and worked hard and courageously, but at the same time, she enjoyed life. She told me that to be the best; I had to pursue my inner passion. So I decided to go into industrial design.
What helped you to become a great designer?
My inner passion for design. And, of course, more importantly, perseverance and constant effort. I used to do design work but as a side job. But when I became more aware of myself and made sure it was my main interest, I made a lot of constant effort.
What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?
Educational Resources. The most critical challenge for someone entering the field of industrial design is finding the right path and practical training resources. You will have to make a lot of mistakes to understand the right track. Because art is an abstract concept, its practical tools are very sophisticated, and at the same time, it will be straightforward when you understand and learn it. I think the right road map was my most significant difficulty.
How do you think designers should present their work?
In a way that best shows the combination of aesthetics and usability of their design. The target community must understand the benefits of the design. But they need to acquire this skill and know that performance alone is like the skeleton of the body, even without muscle. This robust skeleton should be covered with beautiful clothes.
What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?
In the universe, we can all play our part in making the world a better place to live. Art and science are at the service of the human mind to achieve this goal, and design is an art. I try to use art to achieve peace, beauty, and prosperity. Being better and making better.
What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?
I think people like a designer to be very creative. Create new designs and give them beauty, peace, and prosperity in the form of technological aesthetics. They want your design to create a deep sense of artistic pleasure in them.
How does design help create a better society?
I think people like a designer to be very creative. Create new designs and give them beauty, peace, and prosperity in the form of technological aesthetics. They want your design to create a deep sense of artistic pleasure in them. To do this, you have to cultivate your mind and, of course, as an artist, you will have a tremendous social responsibility.
Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?
Design for the disabled. I feel like I'm creating something that makes the world more pleasant and easier for them.
What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?
Extensive and practical use of artificial intelligence and new technologies.
Where do you think the design field is headed next?
Simplify the world for people. Creating security and tranquility.
How long does it take you to finalize a design project?
What is your goal? The final design of the idea. Or the final implementation of the idea. They are different. But it's not a short time anyway.
When you have a new design project, where do you start?

Technology is one of my favorites. The use of technology is not only necessary but inevitable.

How did you develop your skills as a master designer?
Create a goal, design to achieve it. Learning has no boundaries. Creativity is not limited.
How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?
I just want to achieve my goals in life. I would like to evolve. Perhaps the inevitable part of this path is becoming famous. But I would like to continue on my way. I think it's hard to be famous. Increases your responsibility.
What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?
Yellow, Jungle, Pizza, Summer, Electronic Accessories, Not Special.
Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?
When I was a kid, I peeled off the cover of my book and painted inside. It was exciting for me.

Yes, it was. When I was in high school, I went to design classes because I was very interested. One day my teacher gave everyone a simple design for the project and gave me a plan from Master Farshchian to execute. He advised me at that time to go to an art university.
What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?
