Owner of a Design Studio recently with two partners, having attended clients such as Vivo, Amanco, C & A and Editora Abril: Superinteressante and Mundo Estranho, offering quality work for large Brazilian clients. I have a lot of knowledge in the footwear industry, where I attended all the biggest brands in the city where I was born, which is known as the national capital of men's shoes.

Interview with Mateus Morgan

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I graduated in graphic design and since 2006 i worked as art director in design agencies in my city. Time ago i started to work as a freelancer doing jobs for great Brazilian clients.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Morgan Studio is situated in Franca, SP here in Brazil. The studio is focused in 3d and product visualization.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
It's Fly Boot key art. The first i had nominated in A'Design Awards and was a very pleasant project to do.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
A little anxiety at first, then the process becomes satisfying as it goes right
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Relief (because sometimes the process is very exhausting) and pride. But pride begins to disappear as I begin to think about what I might have done differently.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
The feeling that design was able to pass at the end and the composition or diagramation aspects.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The designer is a keeper of a message the company want to show for your public. A good designer can translate this message trough the art.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I had some exposure in university time, but it was a long time ago. If it goes well, my next will be in Milan.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
As a generalist i always have to change my style. But i always think about the sensation the art brings at first.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Brazil, a strong cultural country. But i don't stuck with just brazilian culture to do my arts, the design nowadays started to be more global and multicultural.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
A good designer can be versatile and able to break design rules whenever necessary.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My process start with reference research and then i start some composition tests.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I start usually at 8am and finish at 18h pm. But as a studio owner i have some flexibility, so it's not a routine.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
A good designer can be recognized such an artist and have some benefits with this. But in general is very hard to be well paid and this work can be a lot time consuming.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
It's the composition. Arts with poor composition are always poor appealing.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I try to always wake up at 8am and try to focus at work time, avoiding distractions.
Who are some of your clients?
Vivo, Amanco, Editora Abril (4Rodas, Superinteressante and Mundo Estranho magazines), Vedacit.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I love packaging design. I consider that is one of more important form of design.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I worked with a team with 2 members, but nowadays is just me and some partners. Sometimes we do the work together and sometimes not.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
For now i am working in a 3d motion but the job started right now and there's not too much to talk yet.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have always been passionate about drawing, at the encouragement of my parents I graduated in Graphic Design, since then I have learned as a self-taught and have taken some online courses with great masters like Grant Warwick.
How did you become a designer?
I think the biggest incentive is to be able to impact people's lives in a positive way and in this goal to cross the boundaries of each job.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Firstly have a lot of focus and willpower. Willpower leads even the least talented to their goals.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
The feeling that nothing is left and the power to touch people, cause sensations.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
The value of good design is inherent in the value it can bring to your customer, both financially and in touching the heart of their customers.
What is your day to day look like?
The value of good design is inherent in the value it can bring to your customer, both financially and in arousing desires in their customers.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I have a lot of projects in mind. It's very difficult to tell about one. All autoral projects.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Grant Warwick, Vitaly Bulgarov, Ian Spriggs, Billelis, Alexander Kuskov, there's so many! Some Guys from Brazil also, as Rafael Vallaperde, Milton Menezes, from Lightfarm, Antropus, Guzz Soares.
What is your biggest design work?
I really love Vitaly Bulgarov's designs. Its models have enormous personality and complexity.
Who is your favourite designer?
I thik it's the Fly Boot Project, that won the Platinum Award on A`Design Awards.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Study every day in your life, at least for 10 minuts, if you just have this time.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I don't know, maybe businessman at my father's computer store.
