Interview with Sungkyun Bae

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have been interested in storytelling since I was a child. I chose a platform called animation to tell my story to people. This is because animation is less restrictive in expression.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am working for a one-man company. My company not only produces 2D and 3D animations, but also produces character design, logo design, motion graphics and commercials.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first work I did at the brodcasting station was to produce a campaign for active children.
What makes a design successful?
I believe that the key to successful design is empathy. A lot of people think that a good design must be sympathetic to the design.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I think good design inspiration comes from the road. When you always see the same thing, it is easy to think of the same thing. So, on the ever-changing road, I get inspired by seeing different things and hearing different things.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in south Korea. Koreans are very interested in and influenced by other people. So you can always easily share the latest trends through them.
What skills are most important for a designer?
The most important abilities for a designer are observation and expression. You have to observe a lot, interpret it in your own way, and then express it.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
When I do my work, I mainly use computer programs. I use photoshop, illustrator, maya, cinema4d, unreal engine, etc.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
When I work, I always start in the morning with what I need to do for the day.
Who are some of your clients?
Mostly, game companies and broadcasting stations are my main clients.
