Interview with Mark Boey

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I've studied, Visual communication, Illustration, Digital Media and photography. I've been in the industry for over 20 years. I've started as a Print designer, to Multimedia design, then I've moved to the Film and TV space. Now I'm working on the experience sections.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Untitled Studios is a creative agency that believes in the power of converging design and technology to transform stories and ideas into compelling lasting experiences.
What is "design" for you?
Design is more than visual communication, its more than choosing the right colours, typeface. We need to look deeper than that, it's about problem-solving, coming up with a solution for a solution. It's about change for the better.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
My favourite design is motion, I feel that you can convey better storytelling through motion.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
My first design is for the Australian Museum. I'd designed 6 posters for the launch. Each poster took over 3 months to produce.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
My favourite material is Pen and Paper. I feel that is the quickest way to get my idea out of my head.
What makes a design successful?
There are no one thing for successful design, but there are many little elements that make it amazing.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Does the design solve problems? Does it improve our lives? Does it communicate well? Does it tell a story?
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
We as a designer, we need to be thinking bigger. We need to consider sustainable design in the environment and society.
