She got full scholarship for her Master’s degree. She is talented and creative and A’design past winner year 2017 (wearable technologies design category). She has so many successful projects on her resume; including ranked 6th in industrial design Olympiad nationwide. She involved in the design of 2 successful campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. She was the graphic designer of Ted talk show for the first time in Iran. (TEDXuniversity of Tehran). She was a member of Iran’s National Elites Foundation.

Interview with Maryam Heydarian

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have always wondered design is about combining art and technology. I believe usability by it self is not enough and beauty without usability is not nothing. Therefore, I chose Industrial design to work in this field and will continue to design and create things.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We are a motivated team of engineers and designers aiming to make security and privacy more accessible and meaningful. We believe in the world today, data breach is one of the most common and dangerous threats in both company’s policies and individual’s lives. This is how we came up with the idea of making the first smartphone controlled encrypted flash drive. So you can stay secure without any Internet Requirement, just with a tap on your smart phone. We have great dreams and we do our best to provide a new efficient, affordable and reliable device which protect your privacy and security.
What is "design" for you?
To me design is not just about make appealing things or just about usability, design is the process of imagining and planning the creation of objects, systems $ etc. With using design process like design thinking, double diamond and so on.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I would like to design in form of problem solving products and services which can help people improving their life quality.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Philippe Starck. which contains emotional design. Also I can point out Steve Jobs for designing minimal Apple products. And the last one I can mention Nades Faghihzadeh for designing BMW products.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first thing I designed was a smart ergonomic backpack. which is more than a backpack, cause it can alert when you are carrying things in it more than 10% of your body weight.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
When the design comes to the reality, I feel powerful, happy and proud.
What makes a design successful?
I think the design process is just as important as the final product. I believe there are so many factors that make the design successful. First is concept to me; concept provides the direction for the entire project. Then the research; research is about target group and market & literature review. After is simplicity; which the product should be improved and user friendly and easy to understand.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Being unique. usability and the aesthetics. Also I believe Gestalt (the overview of the product) is important as well.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
According the sustainable design rule. The design should be environment friendly, consumes low energy for making it, be recyclable, has long life cycle and steady.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Technology and art will be combined more and will make life more easy.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
IDIran and university of Tehran exhibitions. And would love to enroll in some global exhibitions.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I was born in Iran which is popular for it's art and culture. I have always inspired from the mosques designs and the souvenirs.
How do you work with companies?
I would love to work as a freelancer cause that makes me experience so many new things.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Usually I work with the technology companies. They usually love to pick an experienced, mind free and committed designers.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Design thinking which is contains 6 parts; 1-empathize, 2-define, 3-Ideate, 4-prototype, 5- test and 6-implement.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
chairs,chandeliers, picture and frames, plants and all the wallpapers.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I start my day with doing Yoga and listen to music. then usually walk to work and get inspired by the nature. then start a good day with coworkers and create new designs.end it with a good food and familly.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
positive ones: being creative and inspired and up to date. negative: just copying from old designs
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
brainstorming and Swot. also software like: 3Dmax Rhino Vray Cinema 4D Photoshop Adobe xd Illustration
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
getting better in designing smart products and combining art and technology more often.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
it depends on the project. i do both. team work and as an indivisual.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have been working in Industrial design field since 2012. I worked for some companies and startups like Clexi, Hio, ID Melon and ...
How did you become a designer?
I think whatever is around us from the chair we sit on to the smartphones that we use everyday they all have a purpose and behind the goal of whatever we use, there is always a unique and great design. I always wanted to be that designer who thinks and designs something new and practical.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I have always followed the design process that suits the project. For Clexi we followed thinking process and security rules.n
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Every time I start a design i am so happy and exited that I have to think and face some new challenges. sometimes i get frustrated if I can not impress my feelings in the design, but if that happens I just need to take a short break and start over. overall designing is my passion and I feel happy, proud and confident while working. Renders and final product is the most exciting part for me.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I love to exercise, do Yoga, listen to music, play Violin and paint. all these skills together brought me focus, creativity, motivation and peace. for being a good designer all these skills are required to me.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I love to work with bigger and international companies. Also I would love to continue my education and go for my PHD. I would love to travel more to historic countries to learn more about their culture and get inspired.I want to be involved more in designing new devices using the latest methods of technology.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Don't ever get disappointed or frustrated if you couldn't express what you want to show in your design. patience is the key. the more you work, the easier the designing will get for you. just follow your dreams and passion. also don't forget to learn about the available platforms and software which van help you grow your design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Based on my experiences and age I consider my self as a successful designer. i would suggest to read and study about the culture and history more. and learn to use computer software and platforms more. also don't ever get dissapointed.
What is your day to day look like?
Everyday I start my morning with doing some Yoga and some reading as soon as I get to work. talking to people. coworkers and customers give me a better point of view and I feel motivated. when ever I have to design i try to be focus and take notes of people's opinion. I do my best in the office and finish my day with a great food with the beloved ones.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I follow so many designers's blogs and social media pages. Also i read the news everyday and check the trend and fashion daily in newspapers and websites. I get inspired by the news and trend, but i believe I should follow my own way in designing and design new products.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Good design is not just what looks good. It also needs to perform, convert, astonish, and fulfill its purpose. It can be innovative or it might just get the job done. A good design cannot be measured by a finite way multiple perspectives are needed.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Checking to see if you applied all the protocols and points that make your product unique. check to see if it is based on the needs and requires of the clients. if it fits the materials that you want to use and show the passion and feelings that you wanted to show.
What is your biggest design work?
Clexi design is the biggest design i have ever done. because i worked in an international company with an international target audiences. i learned so many new things about materials, latest methods of security and cyber security and data breaches. also i traveled to other countries for designing this USB drive
Who is your favourite designer?
One of my favorite designs is: Philippe Starck. which contains emotional design. Also I can point out Steve Jobs for designing minimal Apple products. And the last one I can mention Nades Faghihzadeh for designing BMW products.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I am from Iran which is one the most famous countries in culture and architecture, however Paris has always been a place where creative people come from around the world come to flourish. Paris also inspires me. Paris distills a world that is full of fantastic things to see, do, and think about. Because of the great density of things that appeal to the senses, the mind, the spirit that I experienced in Paris
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I always loved to work and learn new things, being a team member makes me inspire more and be more motivated. I love to chose companies which they work as a start up and everyone is motivated as well.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
The purpose of philanthropy is to improve the well being of humankind by preventing and solving social problems. I would love to be a part of this community and provide opportunities for designers and artists and architects.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
A design is an international competition, it will help us grow our business faster and introduce it easier to our audiences. A design will also approve the value of a design.

I finished my MS in Industrial design, and my MA in Industrial and product Design , University of Tehran,Iran. Also have been working in this field since 2012

design brings the main purpose of creating something. it is so important for an item to be well designed, design combines since and art.

A smart vacuum cleaner. I'd love work with Dyson company one day.
