Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

More than 25 years ago, I began my architectural journey . For me, architecture is process where functionality meets imagination. It is about creating spaces that are not only efficient and sustainable but also inspire and engage humans. My architectural work is an expression of this belief, striving to bridge the gap between practical needs and aesthetic value. Art, in its essence, is about expression and connection. As an architect, my perspective on art is integrated into my designs; I see architecture as a form of art that people inhabit. My approach is deeply rooted in the belief that buildings should enhance the environment and enrich lives, merging seamlessly with their cultural and historical context. This fusion of art and architecture in my works aims not only to satisfy functional needs but also to create enduring beauty that resonates with individuals and communities, carrying forward my lifelong dedication to transforming environments through thoughtful, innovative, and aesthetically enriching designs.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

Artytechs was founded in 2014. Since its establishment, the company has collaborated closely with both the public and private sectors, resulting in the successful implementation of numerous projects. The name of Artytechs has become synonymous with international architectural excellence, as the company has received multiple prestigious awards. Artytechs is known for its ability to create intricate and imaginative projects that surpass traditional architectural approaches.

What is "design" for you?

For me, design, specifically in the form of architecture, represents the essence of my life and its greatest purpose. It is a powerful medium through which history is made and preserved. The buildings I create are more than just structures; they are my legacy. They will speak for me and tell my story long after I am gone, embodying the impact and significance of my life’s work.

What kinds of works do you like designing most?

I am most passionate about designing projects that challenge me and require overcoming significant difficulties. I strive to create unique works that not only claim a special place in their environment but also contribute to history, leaving a lasting impact.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

The Georgian Alphabet Tourist Center is one of my most esteemed projects. This innovative design uniquely showcases each letter of the Georgian alphabet as a separate room for tourists. The layout is strategically distributed across a simulated area that mirrors the map of Georgia, with pathways that echo the country's geographical contours. The exterior walls of each letter- themed room are adorned with elements from Georgia's rich historical and cultural heritage. This design not only serves as an architectural marvel but also educates and engages tourists, enhancing their understanding of Georgia's profound history.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

The first project I designed for a company was the "Museum" Hotel. It was a complex undertaking that involved reconstructing and modernizing an existing building while preserving most of its original architectural details. The challenge was to adapt it to meet contemporary needs without losing its historical essence. Successfully, the building retained its authentic appearance, including the famous balconies, railings, and ornaments, seamlessly blending the old with the new.

What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

My favorite material to work with is wood, specifically finger joint panels. These panels are crafted by joining wooden lamellas end to end using a finger joint technique, which is then laterally glued to create a continuous piece. This method not only enhances the wood's strength and stability but also makes it a versatile solution suitable for a variety of applications.

When do you feel the most creative?

I feel the most creative when I am working on a sketch. This is the stage where ideas flow freely, allowing me to explore and visualize new concepts and architectural possibilities.

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

I focus primarily on innovating the expression of forms. This involves creating unique and compelling architectural shapes that not only meet functional needs but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the structure.

What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

When I design, I experience a profound sense of creation, akin to shaping a new world. Each project brings a unique and important opportunity to innovate and express, evoking a deep, fulfilling emotion as I bring these ideas to life.

What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

Sometimes, when I pass by buildings I've designed and seeing them actively enjoyed and appreciated by people greatly uplifts and motivates me. Often, I find myself silently observing and interacting with these spaces, drawing inspiration and pride from the positive impact they have on people's lives.

What makes a design successful?

A successful design stands out through its uniqueness and innovative approach. It is successful when the vision, first formed in the mind and sketched on paper, is realized exactly as planned in construction. If the final structure meets its intended purpose and positively impacts users, then the project is truly successful.

When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

I first consider the uniqueness and differentiation in the forms.

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

Design plays a crucial role in shaping the lifestyles of communities and individuals by dictating the way spaces are used and interacted with. Design influences a person's mood, materials impact health, and ambiance shapes the overall experience. Together, these elements are critical in creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also conducive to well- being and comfort.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

I believe the design field is continuously evolving, with future trends likely expanding into unprecedented territories, including the development of civilizations on other planets. This progression underscores design's limitless potential and its role in shaping future societies.

When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

I have not participated in physical exhibitions; instead, I primarily engage in international competitions online. This allows me to showcase my work to a global audience from any location.

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

My design inspiration often begins with a thorough study of the location intended for the project. I develop concepts based on the function of the project and the character of the surrounding environment, while also considering innovative forms. Inspiration can strike from any source; for instance, once at a restaurant, a rolled-up napkin on a plate sparked an idea for a building design, which I sketched immediately. Such moments show how everyday observations can fuel my creativity and lead to unique architectural ideas.

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

My design style is characterized by a blend of innovation and diversity, often incorporating multiple styles within a single building. I am particularly drawn to projects that involve redeveloping historic buildings, where I preserve the original elements while integrating modern aesthetics.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I live in Georgia, a country rich in ancient history and architectural heritage. This cultural background deeply influences my designs, especially in my work on reconstruction projects, such as various hotel renovations including the Hotel Museum, and hotels in Vardzia and Abastumani. The major advantage is the inspiration I draw from such a rich heritage, which infuses depth and context into my work. However, a challenge is ensuring modern functionality while respecting historical accuracy and integrity in these structures.

How do you work with companies?

I collaborate with numerous architectural firms, often working together on joint projects. These collaborations consistently yield successful and visible outcomes.

What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

Selecting a good designer requires careful consideration. Companies should first review the designer's portfolio and evaluate buildings constructed from their designs. It's important that the designer demonstrates the ability to listen effectively and accurately interpret the client's wishes. Evaluating a designer's track record of successful projects can also provide insights into their reliability and skill level. Trust grows with proven success.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

My design process involves a deep immersion into each project. I metaphorically step away from the real world and enter a realm of imagination, allowing me to freely innovate and create. This approach enables me to explore and develop unique architectural solutions.

What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

1. Lighting fixtures that enhance the ambiance. 2. Large stained glass windows for aesthetic appeal and natural light. 3. A connection with nature, such as a porch or garden. 4. Use of wood materials in the interior for warmth and texture. 5. Artistic decorations that personalize the space.

Can you describe a day in your life?

My day begins at 8 AM with a cup of coffee on the veranda, setting a calm start before the busyness kicks in. I then head to various construction sites to oversee progress and address any immediate needs. Post-lunch, my afternoons are typically reserved for meetings with clients in the office. As the evening approaches, I review the day’s work completed by my staff to ensure everything aligns with our standards. Once the office quiets down and everyone leaves, I find solitude to be the perfect state for creativity; that's when I start sketching out new concepts. This quiet, focused work usually extends until about 1 AM, after which I head home. This routine combines managerial duties with my personal creative process, encapsulating the life of an active and deeply involved architect.

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

Success in design demands immense hard work, a deep passion for architecture, and the relentless pursuit of turning your ideas into reality. Stay committed, keep learning, and always push the boundaries of your creativity to achieve your visions.

From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

Positively, the design process is incredibly exciting; each project is a new adventure that keeps life engaging. As designers, we not only enhance environments but also create legacies that may last for centuries or at the very least, significantly impact the present. On the other hand, I personally see no negatives in being a designer or architect; it is a fulfilling profession that continuously offers opportunities for creative expression and innovation.

Living with architecture, constantly imagining and sketching new designs whenever inspiration strikes

What skills are most important for a designer?

For a designer, imagination is the most crucial skill. It enables architects to envision and create innovative solutions that transform spaces and experiences.

Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

In my work, I utilize Revit and Enscape for architectural design and visualization. For hardware, I depend on high-performing computers to handle complex models and calculations. Additionally, I incorporate VR technologies, specifically the Oculus Quest Pro, to provide immersive experiences and detailed previews of projects.

The most frequently asked question I receive is, "Can you advise me on how to become a good architect?"

What was your most important job experience?

Early in my career, I encountered numerous challenges and made several mistakes. However, learning from these mistakes proved invaluable, providing me with a wealth of experience that I now share with others. This process of learning and growth has been fundamental to my development as a designer.

Who are some of your clients?

My clients primarily include hotel owners and property developers.

What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

I most enjoy working on hotel projects and reconstructions, particularly those that deviate from standard architectural norms.

What are your future plans? What is next for you?

As an architect, my future plans involve mentoring and nurturing a new generation of skilled architects. For the company, we aim to embark on numerous large-scale international projects, expanding our reach and impact in the architectural field.

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

I run my own company with my partners, where up to 25 employees currently work. Despite our size, I personally stay involved in every aspect of each project, ensuring a hands-on approach to our design and execution processes.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

I've been engaged in architecture for 24 years, starting as an assistant architect and now leading my own firm. My portfolio includes renowned buildings in Georgia such as government-commissioned houses of justice, hotels, and multipurpose complexes, along with many significant reconstruction projects. 2023-present. Lecturer of the Faculty of Architecture of the Caucasus University. How did you become a designer?

I've dreamed of becoming an architect since childhood. My journey began when I started drawing even before I could fully speak. I possess a natural talent for imagination that has been instrumental to my creative processes throughout my career. Over the years, I've faced and overcome numerous challenges, continually building on my experience. Initially, I made many mistakes, especially due to a lack of technical knowledge. However, these errors were pivotal in learning how to properly design and execute projects. My early work involved small-scale projects like individual homes. Gradually, as I gained expertise, I moved on to larger developments such as apartment buildings, hotels, shopping malls, and even government facilities like justice houses. This progression in project size and complexity taught me that skill and capability evolve with experience. Becoming a designer has been an intriguing and integral part of my life, shaping my professional and personal growth.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

My design process is methodical and comprises several stages, beginning with an in-depth dialogue with the client. Understanding the client's needs accurately is crucial and forms the foundation of my approach. This initial step ensures that I grasp the client's vision and objectives thoroughly, which is vital for successful design execution. Next, I conduct a comprehensive study of the project area, assessing its current development and potential. Following this analysis, I move on to sketching and creating a preliminary mock-up. These early designs are then refined using computer software to produce a detailed and scaled version, which I present to the client for feedback. Once the conceptual phase is approved, we advance to the technical detailing of the project. This systematic approach allows me to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal, ensuring that each design not only meets but exceeds the client's expectations.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

The design process is a deeply exciting and emotional journey for me, with each stage bringing its own unique set of feelings. From the initial interaction with the client, where I strive to build a relationship and understand their vision (Stage 1), to the in-depth study of the project area (Stage 2), every phase is intriguing. Sketching the initial ideas (Stage 3) stirs creativity, while preparing the technical drawings (Stage 4) focuses on precision and detail. The process of obtaining a building permit from the city administration (Stage 5) involves anticipation and often, a bit of anxiety. The construction phase (Stage 6) is particularly poignant, as it involves overseeing the project come to life through authorial supervision, culminating in the emotional handover of the completed building.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

My development as an architect has been shaped by a combination of key skills including principle, strength, motivation, and a vivid imagination. My motivation is fueled by the success of my projects, which in turn are founded on the principles of resilience and integrity. These principles guide me to overcome challenges and navigate obstacles effectively. The ability to make swift and accurate decisions, often relying on intuition, plays a critical role in my architectural practice. Moreover, an architect's work requires a deep understanding of human psychology. Successfully interpreting and fulfilling client needs demands a keen ability to recognize and respond to their desires, which is a skill I have honed over the years. This blend of technical expertise, psychological insight, and creative imagination has profoundly shaped my approach to design and continues to drive my success in the field.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

My architectural career began 24 years ago when I started as an assistant architect. After a year, seeking greater opportunities for development, I took the significant step of changing jobs. This move came with a commitment to working 16 hours a day, accelerating my learning and experience accumulation far beyond the normal pace. This rigorous dedication paid off as I progressively handled larger and more complex projects, including significant works for both the private sector and government. Today, I am the proud owner of my own firm, which has earned 24 international awards. My experiences have not only enriched my professional life but also allowed me to mentor future architects. Looking forward, I aim to expand our reach with multiple international projects, developed in collaboration with my partners. This aligns with my dream design project, which would involve creating a groundbreaking architectural marvel that harmoniously blends innovative design with environmental sustainability on a global scale. This project would ideally not only push the boundaries of conventional architecture but also set new benchmarks for the integration of technology and natural environments.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

For new designers, my key advice is to live and breathe architecture. Embrace it as part of your daily life. What is your day to day look like?

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

While I am aware of the latest design trends, I prioritize creating designs that set their own trends—distinct, unique, and non-standard. My approach to design is deeply personal, characterized by a signature style that ensures each project stands out. I ensure that my projects are diverse, each tailored to meet the specific needs of the client and the environment through customized approaches. This method allows me to innovate freely while still responding thoughtfully to each design challenge. In this way, while I recognize the value of current trends, I focus more on crafting spaces that are meaningful and contextually relevant rather than conforming strictly to popular styles.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

I assess a well-designed project by envisioning the creative process behind its creation. To me, good design is characterized by the harmony of architectural forms, aesthetic appeal, proper planning, and correct technical execution. These elements must seamlessly integrate to create a coherent and functional design.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

My design process is iterative, moving from one project to the next in a continuous search for perfection. I consider a design complete when the sketch not only fits harmoniously into its environment but also meets the developmental needs of the surrounding area and fulfills the client's requirements. A design is finalized when it effectively addresses the functional purpose and achieves aesthetic coherence.

What is your biggest design work?

The Monk Andrew’s Rehabilitation Center in the village of Dighomi near Tbilisi, Georgia, has given me immense satisfaction. This project was developed on a 6493 m2 plot of state-owned land, which was allocated to the Monk Andrew’s Foundation by the Georgian Government for charitable purposes. The construction of the 2000 sq.m. rehabilitation center was completed in 2023. It now serves as a healing space for children suffering from cancer. This charity project was deeply gratifying because it allowed me to use architecture as a tool for recovery, creating a nurturing environment where many children have found solace and healing.

Who is your favourite designer?

Frank Gehry is my favorite architect I would love to have a conversation with Antoni Gaudí One of my favorite designs is the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris, designed by I.M. Pei. This architectural feature marks a significant era, blending the historical significance of the Louvre with modern architectural elements. The pyramid serves as a striking yet harmonious contrast to the classical architecture of the museum, creating a distinct historical narrative without compromising the integrity of the existing structures.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

Vienna is my favorite city. Music plays a crucial role in my creative processes, and my cultural background significantly influences my design projects. Design plays a crucial role in shaping the lifestyles of communities and individuals by dictating the way spaces are used and interacted with. Sometimes, when I pass by buildings I've designed and seeing them actively enjoyed and appreciated by people greatly uplifts and motivates me. Often, I find myself silently observing and interacting with these spaces, drawing inspiration and pride from the positive impact they have on people's lives. I cherish all my buildings like a mother cherishes her children. I've nurtured them from concept to construction and continue to maintain a close connection with them.

Our company's approach to development and business has been firmly established since its inception, largely due to the diverse expertise of our management team. This team includes four professionals from different backgrounds, enabling rapid company growth. Aleksandre Burchuladze brings 25 years of experience in business management and consulting within both private and public sectors. Archil Dzidziguri, our head of marketing, contributes extensive marketing expertise, alongside another key member Kote Gvinjilia who has significant experience in public service, particularly as the head of the permit department for historical areas. Their knowledge is crucial, especially concerning legislative aspects. Our company does more than create architectural projects; we provide clients with commercially viable and profitable ventures. The cornerstone of our business success is our ability to produce successful projects, which are the result of a dedicated, professional, and motivated team. When selecting partners, we prioritize commitment, professionalism, and integrity, qualities that are fundamental to fostering a successful and developed business. In any collaboration, my primary requirement is a focus on continual development, which is essential for the success of our projects. Being an architect involves the responsibility of creating world landmarks, a duty we take seriously and expect every team member to uphold.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

Charitable projects play a crucial role in my professional activities, reflecting my ongoing commitment as an architect. The expertise I've acquired over the years has not only provided me with opportunities but has also instilled a sense of social responsibility, compelling me to apply my skills for charitable purposes. The participation of architects in social and charitable activities is vital, whether through specific projects like our rehabilitation center or by sharing professional knowledge. An essential aspect of my contribution to society is mentoring the next generation of architects. Currently, our firm actively recruits and trains young architects and interns, offering them a platform to learn and gain valuable experience. In 2023, I expanded my role by becoming a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at Caucasus University. The university is on its way to becoming a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), a prestigious professional organization globally recognized in the field of architecture. In this position, I am dedicated to educating and shaping future architects, helping them to understand the nuances of creating, growing, and developing in this field. I believe that these future professionals will produce innovative projects that will contribute to the new history of the world. My role in this process is to provide a meaningful social service by imparting knowledge and fostering development among aspiring architects.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

Winning the A Design Award has been a significant milestone in my career as an architect. This recognition not only enhances my professional stature but also opens up more opportunities for work, both locally and internationally. It marks a pivotal point in my professional development, attracting new and exciting projects to our firm. Although I have received several international awards, the A' Design Award stands out as particularly impactful. It not only affirms my work at a high level but also motivates me to strive for even greater achievements. I am inspired to participate in the A' Design Award repeatedly, aiming to showcase increasingly innovative projects and further my professional growth.
