Interview with Cheng Yu Lan

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
ChenChing imagine was co-founded by myself and my partner. I have the knowledge and experience of design and my partner specialises in marketing. We are both passionate about design, art and culture and will continue to pursue this path.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
We attach great importance to the "original spirit" and advocate designing all the small details in life. In less than two years after its establishment, we have won five international awards. We respect any culture and hope to bring cultural emotions into the design. Continuous growth is our belief.
What is "design" for you?
Design is an attitude. It may be life. It may be social humanity. It may be a commercial activity.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
We hope to continue to make breakthroughs and always look forward to the next project.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Each material and technology has its own strengths and weaknesses, and each partner manufacturer has its own expertise, so we are open to all elements of manufacturing.
When do you feel the most creative?
Basically, creativity can happen at any moment, but the execution is usually in the quiet of the evening.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The designer is in fact multifaceted. He may be a cultural translator, an environmental pioneer, or an inventor of convenience. But either way, the premise of commercial volatility is linked, and it is important to strike a balance between the environment and the humanity and social structure.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
In the future, everyone's requirements for design will not only be "beautiful", "convenient", and "practical". They will also hope to express emotions and humanistic requirements. "Emotional design" may be the future development.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Every moment in life is a source of inspiration, keeping an open mind of curiosity and accepting different ideas and cultures.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Our company has always hoped that our design has a unique personality, no matter what kind of product it is.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
We are a product design company from Taiwan and the aboriginal culture of Taiwan is one of the factors that influences us, along with the Chinese culture of course. This may sometimes be very different from Western aesthetics, but we have discovered the meaning of “fusion” and that perhaps the “differences” can also bring beauty.
How do you work with companies?
We have been actively working on projects and have transformed from a design studio to a design company.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Ambition is the main personality trait, as it drives a person to improve.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Be persistent and don't let go of any detail that expresses the design.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
The source of inspiration usually comes from various books, even movies, or perhaps a delicious restaurant.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
We have always believed that design is really about life, and that you don't have to be at your desk all the time to be working. Inspiration from life is also a form of work, but we will establish a work schedule and strictly implement it.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
An industrial design or product design case, from conception to mass production is a very lengthy process, on average one to one and a half years.
Who are some of your clients?
We have helped many SME manufacturers to transform their products so that clients can enhance their corporate image through design.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Any type of design are interesting, because design is an interesting thing.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
In the future, we plan to expand the company's operating system, increase staffing, and expand brand marketing services. Cultural aspects will be explained in the way of integrating culture into design and presented on products.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
My undergraduate department studied architectural design. Due to my preference for product design, I turned to product design field development, and I have ten years of relevant work experience.
How did you become a designer?
In fact, my design inspiration was very late. It was purely because I really liked the feeling of creation that I gradually developed the design profession.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I want my design to give people a sense of accuracy, neatness, and richness.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I usually feel excited at the beginning, and there will be many different emotions in the process,but I still enjoy it very much.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
If I really want to say, I think my ethnic background gives me a significant design energy. Because I am an aboriginal in Taiwan, the educational environment of the Chinese collides with my original education, and the sparks produced are an important experience in my design career.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
To be a designer for nearly 10 years in my career, I have tried to absorb nutrients from observations of life and the environment, hoping to increase Taiwan’s attention to and application of design in the future, and a design experience that can make people feel happy is my dream.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Be persistent and don't let go of any detail that expresses the design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I haven’t successful yet. Every art or architecture has a subjective evaluation.
What is your day to day look like?
The beginning of the day is usually random. When inspiration flows in, I will create uninterruptedly. When there is no inspiration, I will also enjoy and experience my life.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Popularity is a trend, but the design is unique. It will continue to evolve better than people can have a good experience.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
"Good" design is the most suitable design, no matter which aspect it is, such as use method, industrial manufacturing, brand effect, etc.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I don't think any design is perfect and ready, because there is always a better design to optimize our experience. Isn't this the reason for the continuous improvement of industrial design?
Who is your favourite designer?
I think the designers I contact have all the knowledge and nutrients that I can absorb.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I love Taichung, Taiwan, I live there, moreover music and culture also influence my design.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

A good designer has an accurate and good design, but for a great designer, in addition to that, people will want to know more about the design because of his design.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
"Good" design is the most suitable design, no matter which aspect it is, such as use method, industrial manufacturing, brand effect, etc.
What is your day to day look like?
I think it will be furniture, so that most people can get good and comfortable things easierly in life.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
There isn’t too late to do our design, we do all projects that are not available on the market.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
The reason that drove us to continue to engage in design is not only our love of work, but also our family's tolerance for us. Enjoying life, earnestly understanding, continuous learning and progress are the ways we think can be successful.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
The design masters I have been in contact with have allowed me to gain knowledge and nutrients in all aspects.
What is your biggest design work?
For me, the environment and life I live in are the best designers, and they give me unlimited inspiration.
Who is your favourite designer?
Each of my designs has the reasons and advantages that they must exist. Without their existence, there will be no subsequent designs.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
It is an attitude, a feeling, and a way of dialogue with the world.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
Many people who appear in my life will inspire me, especially my mate, because she gets along with me day and night.
