Interview with Vasilis Mylonas

What is "design" for you?
Design is a succesful mix of form, function and artistic aspiration.
When do you feel the most creative?
When everything seems to have hit a dead end and feel like there are no more options available in the design process. Actually, that always turn out to be relieving. Reaching "bottom" leaves you no option but going all the way up.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Fulfilment. Almost like successfully raising a child. Afterall, all my designs are my children. I see them growing from birth to maturity.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Anything can be an inspiration. But as a rule of thumb, I would say that keeping one's mind in constant motion is essential. Travel, books, articles, cinema, literature, music and art in any form is what keeps me going.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Tons of pencils, notebooks, markers and of course any professional cad software would best fit the project.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Project complexity and client mentality are two factors that will always determine the actual time required to finish a project.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
"Could you do it cheaper?" And the answer is always no. Quality design always requires tons of time and dedication, and that can't come cheap.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
The first steps are always the scariest but also the most intriguing. So, I would definitely say the very first rough sketches towards the actual birth of a concept is where all the "magic" is happening.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Depends on the project. I usually develop my designs on my own, but large scale architecture projects and international competitions most often would require a team. After all, two heads are better than one.
