Interview with Gabriela Herde

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Yes, I always wanted to be a designer, since I was little, I was always very visual, tidying the house was my favorite game, I always liked animals too, but I ended up opting for design, and later, architecture.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My office is 12 years old this year, as soon as I graduated in Interior Design, I opened my office and started studying Architecture. After that, I started working in both areas, also working on architectural and urban projects.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a creative process that seeks the best solution for a project. A good design meets people's needs, with functionality, affordable cost, good taste and financial and environmental sustainability, bringing more quality of life to people. Design and innovation are almost always linked.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The future of design is sensorial, the fact is that we are visual beings and will always be, but as long as we add to our solutions different ways of exploring the potential of each of the senses, we will stay ahead in the race for differentiation in the saturated market, whatever the scenario is.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
It was at Casacor SC, in 2019, it was a library called Books and Art. I would like to hold my next one at Casacor SP.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My design inspirations come from my travels, the courses I take, the fairs and exhibitions I attend, my inspiration comes from all over the world and its different cultures.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I don't have a defined style, my design is plural and it relates a lot to the phase I'm living during the development of each project.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Brazil, on a small beach, in the south of the country, where there has been a lot of development in the field of civil construction. Being in Brazil contributes a lot to my projects, as it is a country with very creative minds and culturally rich.
How do you work with companies?
My relationship with companies has always been very good, of mutual exchange and constant learning.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
The company's proposal must match the designer's purposes.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My creative process is based on stepping out of the ordinary, out of the conventional.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I don't manage my time, I really like the concept of Slow Design, for that, I make sure to be always earlier with my projects so I can make time to really get in to it.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
I don't design objects, I design buildings and interiors, its about three months to design that.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Facade projects, because you can change all the style of the building, giving life to what is boring.

How did you become a designer?
Design was my first college, later I graduated in architecture, I decided to do design because of my passion for creating, from a very early age.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
When designing, I always try to develop something original and unique, I pay attention to the client's wishes and try to translate his dream into paper.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I always feel butterflies in my stomach when starting a new project, because it's a world of possibilities that opens up, I always learn a lot with each new project.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I am particularly interested in quality and not quantity, I dedicate myself personally with my team to each project, I always try to develop projects that, in addition to being beautiful, are functional and sustainable.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I believe that I have a beautiful path ahead of me, my future plans are to keep working, always offering the best of myself and dedicating myself every day to making cities more pleasant with my architecture, my dream is that all people in the world could have the chance to live in comfortable houses, with basic sanitation and protection.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I think what's important is that you do what you like, that way you'll go a long way.
What is your day to day look like?
I don't have a routine, my day to day varies a lot, I divide myself between projects, works, work trips, fairs, and it's always very busy and rewarding to work with what we love.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I travel a lot to keep up with trends, I'm always present at the main design fairs in the world.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I like innovation, creativity and quality, and for me good design comes down to that.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
A project is never ready, lol... we always have something else to do, just like great works are always under construction.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I'm Brazilian, I live in the south of the country, in the state of Santa Catarina, I have a beautiful family, I love what I do, architecture is something that excites me.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
In my office we believe that quantity is not quality, we strive for few and good projects.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I would love to contribute to society through needy communities, providing decent housing for everyone.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
It was very positive and enriching to participate in this award, it made me believe more in my potential.

In 2010 I graduated from Interior Design. In 2015 I graduated from Architecture.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I evaluate the role creative process. A good design requires a lot of research.
Who is your favourite designer?
My greatest design so far is RIVERSIDE 01, I love its shape, location, materials, scale and concept.
