Eyyup Karayigit is a versatile designer who can bring his products to life by combining experience with creativity. According to today's designers, the biggest difference we have seen in him is that all his designs are made up of projects that can be manufactured and that they are drawn in a way that facilitates production while they are still at the drawing stage. He also produced all of his designs. According to him, a real designer should not limit himself, if he can draw a boat today, he should be able to work on a furniture drawing tomorrow. With years of experience, Karayiğit is a designer who can understand what the other person wants and can create a design according to his wishes and style (classic, modern, luxury, etc.).

Interview with Eyyup Karayigit

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I've been designing things since I was a kid. When I was a teenager, I used to draw constantly. Creating is about curiosity and discovery. When I was a little kid, I was curious and tried everything. The secret here is that your parents support you. My family has never undermined my curiosity and has always supported me. With this confidence, I never stopped producing and inventing. I've been a designer for as long as I can remember. That's why I can say yes to the question, "Do you want to be a designer?"
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My design adventure started in the early 2000s with a furniture company I founded and designed. Later, I developed this experience and transferred it to the marine industry, which I am passionate about. In my current design office, I serve a broad spectrum.
What is "design" for you?
Design is the presentation of a known object from different perspectives. At the same time, design is the most important mirror that reflects the designer's spirit.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
First, I like to draw designs that can be manufactured, not concept products. In addition, the designer should not limit himself. As a sea lover, I have been designing boats with greater pleasure lately.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favourite design is understanding someone else's dream, drawing it, and bringing it alive.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
I started with the interior design project. Highly appreciated. After many interior design designs, I started to make my boat designs.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I can't imagine that the designer can have a material because the most important thing about the designer is that she can take the most insignificant detail for someone else and create a magnificent design from it.
When do you feel the most creative?
I can always be creative when I'm alone with myself. I don't need time to create something; anything I see in nature can trigger my creativity.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I always focus on the finest details and invisible parts. After all, success is in the details.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I usually feel enthusiasm when drawing my designs. I make sure that the products I design to appeal to people's eyes and their souls. This effort has always excited me.
What makes a design successful?
If the designer's spirit is on the other side, this design is successfuion, the most important details are that it is manufacturable, valuable and sustainable.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
First is the appearance. Research shows that the first 7 seconds determine our opinion of something as good or bad. That's why looks matter. Then originality and quality are the most important elements that make a design good.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
While designing products that serve the need, the designer should realise designs that follow current developments and are compatible with the technology. Our world is rapidly polluting, and many products or materials harm the environment. Designing with environmentally friendly and recyclable materials is very important for the future of this world and our children.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is doomed to change. It varies according to current conditions, world order, designer's feelings, spirit, generational differences, needs, environment and technological developments. This question, therefore, requires an answer that is too open-ended to be answered with imagination.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
|I presented in Marmaris with my Barva 60 model (floating house), which I designed and manufactured myself. This design, which attracted great attention, made me very happy.(2022) I plan to re-promote the first product whose production is finished since I produce the projects I have drawn myself.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Frankly, I don't have a particular choice in this regard. An utterly unrelated object can inspire my design. This is the secret of the designer.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
The most distinctive feature I have seen in my style is making completely different designs that do not repeat each other. Unfortunately, designs that are very similar to popular designs are made today. This is the biggest mistake in my opinion. The designs made before are already done and finished. Then something better needs to be done.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Yalova, Turkey. But I can be in different cities due to work. My country has a geopolitical position surrounded by seas on three sides. This helps me to serve the marine industry, which I am passionate about, and to bring my designs to life.
How do you work with companies?
It would be wrong to say anything explicit about it. I evaluate this process according to the design, the project, and the work done.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
First, working with an honest, committed designer with a work discipline will make it easier for companies. The most important feature of the designer selected for companies is that he is a designer who will not reduce the company's brand value and will carry the company to higher levels and new target audiences with unique designs.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Usually, when I start developing a product, I am not interested in anything else. I am almost in love with my design, like writing a book or composing a song. Since it is still being determined where and when my inspiration will come, I can always be ready for design work.

Can you describe a day in your life?
I start the day as early as possible. I plan my day and what I need to do by making my work schedule. During these works while doing these things, certain things inspire and motivate me.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
The lifestyle of today's youth makes me think. When I look at it, it is unfortunate to see a generation that has become a prisoner of technology, killing their creativity in their spare time. I'm a bit of a traditionalist. My advice to every young designer who will be a designer is not to let go of their originality, to take time for themselves and trust themselves.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Creating and producing something new is a good motivation for me, but the negative side of this job is that you travel as a person who always thinks with a full head before experiencing this.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Designs that are entirely different from the works in their class and that give a feeling of quality when examined.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Creativity, originality and imagination. Revealing an un seen or unconsidered detail.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
The programs I use are; 3D-max, AutoCAD, and SOLID are the programs I use most often.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
What goes through the mind of the designer is essential here. While a TV unit that looks simple to an outsider takes much time, designing a car may be finished in a much shorter time.
What was your most important job experience?
My designs are precious because I take great care of them. But because of my interest in the sea, the Barva 60 project was a unique experience.
Who are some of your clients?
In my country, I have many clients working in professional groups, such as politicians, people in business, and senior executives.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I loved designing boats because this industry is fragile. I have been examining world brands' production for years, and this industry should have gone much further.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I do not live with such a plan, but my new design will have something different from the ones in its class.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Different people will not provide efficiency during the design phase of a product. But in the production phase, robustness, usability, etc. It would be more beneficial to work with the team. Of course, we have a very experienced design team. Working as a team in the design and production phases would be beneficial.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I have new designs in my head all the time. This is already a designer's routine. As Barva Yachts, new structures, such as the Mamba 80 model, will attract attention, for which we have been awarded.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
My design background started from my childhood. My interest in design, which began with toys at a young age. Spread to a wide area after I started to design everything that caught my attention by myself. I studied at The University of Georgia. Of course, it has given me a lot.
How did you become a designer?
Because I think that something can always be done better is my biggest motivation
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Being a designer is not something to be forced. You must think about every detail and add your soul to your work.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
There are no limits to design for me. I can create anything that the human mind can conceive. However, I mostly find myself designing interiors and boats.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

A good designer does whatever the other person wants. A great designer, on the other hand, turns something that others can't even imagine into reality.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
The first look is essential.Research shows that the first 7 seconds determine our opinion of something as good or bad. That's why looks matter. Then originality and quality are the essential elements that make a design good.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
The most important source of value of a good design is the need. But if you complete the plan that will meet the demand in a way that will make the other person happy, it will gain much more value. If investors invest in such a design, their brand value increases and they attract attention.
What is your day to day look like?
I would like to design for someone with a different style rather than a person's name because these people allow you to push the boundaries in your design, unlike people with a classical style.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
It was very important for me to design and manufacture the Mamba 80. The design is finished, now it's time for manufacturing. But the dreams do not end with the designer.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
To make designs utterly different from the works in their class as much as possible and create a sense of quality when examined.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Of course, there are designers that I like very much, but the designer should be original. To start, being influenced by design seems like an imitation.
What is your biggest design work?
I can give many examples, but after a long time after its completion , it's still very popular. Jorn Utzon,(Sidney Opera) , Maurice Koechlin (Eifel Tower-FRANCE), Tom Wright( Burj Al Arap-Dubai) etc. They can be example of design I like.
Who is your favourite designer?
I have many designs, but my Mamba 80 project is unique as I enjoyed working and thought it was completely different from other boats in its class.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
The secret is that your mind is constantly producing something. I never stopped designing. On the other hand, I follow the agenda closely. I observe people and their changing demands and needs. I usually pay attention to design in this direction.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
The answer to this question would still be "DESIGNER" because I immensely love my job.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Design is the presentation of a known object from different perspectives. At the same time, design is the most crucial mirror that reflects the designer's spirit.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
First, I don't see myself at the top because there is always something to learn. But of course, I am indebted to getting the support of my family first and then all my friends around me in developing my business.
