Interview with Yanming Chen

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
During my formative years, I never entertained the idea of pursuing a career in design. However, as I delved deeper into my studies, I gradually began to comprehend the intricate and multidimensional nature of design, quietly interweaving itself into our everyday experiences. This captivating realm revealed itself in the most ordinary objects and occurrences - from the unassuming traffic lights to the vibrant neon signs adorning local shops, from the persuasive advertising campaigns to the immersive worlds meticulously crafted in films. In stark contrast to the classical art forms confined within the walls of museums and galleries, I discovered a fresh allure in commercial and entertainment design. These fields brought a unique and engaging facet to our daily lives. While traditional art provides a medium for evoking emotions through paintings, sculptures, and music, I found design to possess a distinct approach. In my perspective, design is a brilliant synthesis of emotion and practicality, an intricate tapestry woven from the designer's personal sentiments and commercial ambitions. At its core, design embraces a utilitarian stance, deftly interlacing the designer's emotional expressions with strategic objectives. It offers a potent and expressive stage for creators to convey their emotions while simultaneously meeting the needs and goals of a commercial environment. Design transcends mere aesthetics and becomes a harmonious blend of form and function, where the designer's vision harmonizes with the demands of the intended audience. Through design, I discovered a profound avenue for self-expression and creativity that resonated with my own sensibilities. It allowed me to infuse my work with both personal passion and a strategic mindset, crafting solutions that not only evoked emotional responses but also fulfilled practical and commercial objectives. In essence, design presents a unique and captivating landscape where emotions and practicality coexist. It serves as a powerful means for creators to convey their deepest sentiments while meeting the demands of a commercial world. As I ventured further into the realm of design, I found myself continuously drawn to its dynamic interplay of artistic expression and strategic thinking, ultimately shaping my path and igniting a lifelong passion for this multidimensional craft.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Undoubtedly, my most cherished design work thus far is the creative campaign I developed for SCALING INC, an innovative media company that harnesses scalable technologies and tools to drive groundbreaking advertising and marketing campaigns. The essence of SCALING INC's core philosophy is encapsulated in its name, emphasizing growth, efficiency, adaptability, and being at the forefront of modern marketing practices. The design work I created for SCALING was intricately aligned with these principles, extending beyond logo design to encompass stationery set design, poster design, and various other accessories, resulting in a cohesive and unified brand experience. At the heart of the campaign lies the logo—a distinctive geometric figure composed of a lattice of polygon shapes. This lattice design goes beyond visual aesthetics; it carries profound conceptual meaning. It signifies SCALING's commitment to collaborative teamwork and shared success. Each hexagonal piece of the lattice represents an individual component of the network, working harmoniously to form a larger, stronger whole. The central hexagon stands as a symbol of SCALING INC itself, the vital hub that fosters growth and innovation within this interconnected network. The geometric intricacy of the logo mirrors the company's multifaceted operations. The four corner hexagons within the logo represent the four core values of SCALING INC—efficiency, adaptability, rapid growth, and novelty. This concept draws inspiration from the conversion process between binary digits and hexadecimal codes in computer science—a complex system that echoes the nuanced work undertaken by SCALING INC. Additionally, I integrated a distinctive gear-like bee motif using non-regular hexagon shapes. The gear symbolizes efficiency and interconnectedness, while the bee serves as a metaphor for industriousness and communal effort—both qualities that mirror the company's values. Overall, the SCALING INC design project provided me with the opportunity to intertwine profound conceptual thinking with visual aesthetics. It encapsulates my belief in the essence of design—a seamless fusion of visual appeal, meaning, and storytelling that breathes life into a brand. It is this harmonious blend of form and significance that renders the SCALING INC campaign my most cherished piece of design work.

I strive to facilitate their ability to effectively express their brand and engage with their customers through design. Ultimately, my objective is to create design solutions that positively contribute to the company's brand image, enhance user satisfaction, and foster business growth.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
When it comes to collaborating with a designer, my recommendation to companies is to prioritize effective communication, setting clear expectations, and respecting the creative process. Establishing an open and honest dialogue is crucial. Take the time to discuss your company's objectives, brand identity, and the message you intend to convey through the design. It is essential for the designer to grasp the essence of your business in order to authentically reflect it in their designs. From the very beginning, establish transparent expectations regarding deliverables, timelines, and feedback mechanisms to foster a productive working relationship. By empathizing with your audience, you can craft designs that truly resonate and make a positive difference. Lastly, always remember that communication is as crucial as creativity. Regardless of the brilliance of your ideas, if you are unable to effectively convey them to clients or your team, they may never see the light of day. Therefore, hone your ability to articulate your thoughts clearly and persuasively, ensuring that your vision is effectively communicated and understood.
