Interview with Anqi Liu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Richan and Angie have been best friends since high school and share a passion for creativity, having taken art and design classes together to pursue their goals of self-expression and problem-solving. While they went their separate ways in college, their love and enthusiasm for art and design only grew stronger. Richan honed her skills in illustration and animation, while Angie focused on product design. As they built their skill sets and pursued their visions in different fields, their friendship and talent joined in product design. This led to the birth of DG-Meteor, where they continue to inspire and support each other.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
DG-Meteor is a creative studio that welcomes day-to-day challenges, approaches them with a creative mindset, and designs fun and techy products that meet human needs. The studio was founded in 2020 by UI/UX Designer Anqi (Angie) Liu and Animator/Illustrator Yangyuchen (Richan) Li.
What is "design" for you?
At DG-Meteor, we believe design means finding the perfect balance between user experience and visuals, so our designs can speak for themselves.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Creative ideas and designs are a reflection, a combination, a sum of unique voices amplified by an ever-growing process of learning and experimentation. We're passionate about functionality and problem-solving and express these values through dynamic yet relatable visual designs.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
As a collaborative team, our favorite part of the creative process revolves around collaboration and mutual understanding between the two of us, and how we bring our individual strengths together to create a cohesive piece. We strive to learn from and trust each other's expertise as we collaborate and work through the interdisciplinary processes of product design, animation, and illustration. Our shared goal is to achieve visual and functional harmony in our designs.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Behance, which is a good platform to share ideas with different designers and artiest.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Functionality: Design should serve a purpose and be functional. Whether it's a website, an app, or a physical product, usability and ease of use are crucial considerations.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Minimalist: This style emphasizes simplicity, clean lines, and a focus on essential elements. It often involves the use of ample white space, minimal color palettes, and concise typography.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
We recommend seeking inspiration from peers and creatives in your field, as well as exploring nature and history to find what interests you and what problems you would like to solve. Even the smallest things in life can lead to amazing projects. Keep your passion alive in your work, and viewers will be able to sense it through your creations!
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Our creative process begins with the two of us exchanging casual conversations while walking our dogs or driving, discussing what we like and how we can learn or draw inspiration from the daily things that surround us. Once we settle on a topic, we dive into research, sharing insights and inspirations to set the tone, wireframe, and visualize our ideas through experimentation. After the initial brainstorming, we move into production, giving each other space to work, but actively critiquing and sharing feedback to unleash our creativity in our respective areas of expertise and bring the final product to life.
