Mrs. Chance Xie is a trend setter and tastemaker in luxury travel. She led a successful career in finance before founding Greater China's preeminent luxury travel designer Journeys by Chance. Without formal training in design, Mrs. Chance drew on her how-know of world's best and impeccable sense of luxury and style to reinvent the art of babywearing. A mother of two, she is passionate to advocate cultivating love of nature and happiness from within in our next generation.

Interview with Chance Xie

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

A year stranded in paradise in Fiji during the Pandemic, inspired me to become a designer and advocate for happiness from our connection with people and nature. I was an award-winning painter since a young age, however, I pursued a career in finance. Finally, I was inspired enough to focus on my creativity and bring design work that is meaningful to the world.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

IVAU means Bonding in Fijian. Inspired by natural beauty of Fiji, IVAU dedicates to refocus connection in our lives and celebrate beauty of nature.

What is "design" for you?

Design elevates what we see in daily life to timeless creations.

What kinds of works do you like designing most?

My work is inspired by the spellbinding beauty of nature and celebrate our time spend together.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

My favourite design is our Lagoon Butterfly collection that showcases the mesmerizing view of lagoon meets deep ocean.

When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

My last exhibition was in HK and I would like to hold annual exhibition in HK.

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

My source of inspiration comes from the abundant beauty of nature.

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

My style is romantic, inspiring, storytelling. My approach to design is to elevate the eyes can see to timeless creation.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I live in HK & Fiji, two extremes of worlds, both inspire me so much.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

When a view/scenery inspire me, I think about why it touches my heart and turn that into my design creation.

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

I only finish the work when I'm completely satisfied with the result.

How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

My design process is long as I'm a perfectionist. It can take up to a year to finish a design pattern.

What was your most important job experience?

I design once in a lifetime holidays for UHNW families in HK/China through my travel company Journeys by Chance, aside from product design for IVAU.

Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

I'm currently working on a design inspired by the mangrove rivers of Fiji.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

I was an award-winning painter since a young age, however, I pursued a career in finance. Finally, I was inspired enough to focus on my creativity and bring design work that is meaningful to the world.

How did you become a designer?

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

I think design work should be timeless and elevate what eyes can see. It's a work of art, beauty and telling an inspirational story. My work celebrates beauty of nature and our time spend together.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

I feel happiest when creating. To design something of timeless beauty, a product that consumers will cherish the user experience forever is truly meaningful and special.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

I travelled to 80+ countries around the world and have seen some of the most beauty corners of the world. Travel gave me so much inspiration and appreciation for this world we live in.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

I will dedicate my time and creativity to design meaningful products that will nourish close connections in our lives and celebrate beauty of nature.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

Design should focus on usability and celebrate timeless beauty.

What is your day to day look like?

My days are busy with two young children and running two businesses.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

I do not pay attention to what is on trend, instead I create timeless designs inspired by the magical moments in nature.

What is your biggest design work?

My biggest design work is launching the brand IVAU that refocuses connection in our lives and celebrate beauty of nature.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

I was born in mainland China and went to university in USA, lived and traveled around the world.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

I hope my design can help families nurture one of the most meaningful relationship in their lives - bonding with their children.

I did not choose to become a designer, but life inspired me so much to share an important revelation - our connection with loved ones and time spend in nature bring true lasting happiness.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

I design beautiful soft baby wrap carrier to nurture one of the precious moments in parenthood - bonding with newborn.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

A really good design is functional, meaningful and beautiful at the same time.

What is your day to day look like?

I'm dedicated to design beautiful multi-functional baby wraps so women can enjoy the 4th trimester beautifully.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

My secret ingredient is observing the abundant beauty in nature.
