Interview with Ibrahim Halil TUGBAY

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Yes, being a designer was my childhood dream and realizing this dream is an indescribable feeling for me.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Our office is located in Bebek district of Istanbul, Turkey, with 4 Architects, 1 Civil Engineer, 2 Interior Architects and a construction, furniture and application team of about 150 people, working with great dedication and discipline, we have become a big family from the first day to this day.
What is "design" for you?
Design means subconscious for me. All objects that we see, use and settle in our subconscious are a design product and one of the factors that affect human psychology the most.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Village designs are among the projects we enjoy the most. Because each new user opens the doors to a different world and this both excites and teaches us new things about design.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
56-The first thing I designed for a company was usually a logo that reflected the company's identity. A logo is an important element that determines the overall look and feel of the company. Besides the logo, it is also necessary to consider other brand elements such as color palettes, fonts and graphic style. These elements are brought together to effectively communicate the company's mission and vision. In the initial design phase, it is also important to understand the company's target audience and its position in the industry.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
3D Modeling, Animation and Metaverse Glasses. It is one of the platforms that best shows every element and detail we want to show in a project.
When do you feel the most creative?
I do not catch a certain moment to design. Even in my free time for either design or application, I get lost in thoughts, even if unintentionally.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Considering elements such as aesthetics, visuality, consistency, user experience, innovation, I try to ensure that the design is successful and effective both in functionality and aesthetics.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel many different emotions while designing. These emotions usually change depending on the stage of the design process and the challenges faced. Each emotion I feel is part of the process and ultimately helps me to create more satisfying and effective designs.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design is a balanced combination of various elements such as aesthetics, visuality, innovation, functionality and generally offers a user-oriented, aesthetically pleasing and functional solution.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
There are various aspects to consider when evaluating whether a design is good or bad, such as consistency, accessibility, efficiency. These criteria help to evaluate a design in a holistic way and determine the quality of the design.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
A designer has various responsibilities towards society and the environment such as sensitivity, ethics, longevity and sustainability. These responsibilities are important in both ethical and professional terms and include important elements that designers should pay attention to in their work.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The field of design is constantly evolving in line with technological developments, social changes and global trends. While the evolution of the field of design is shaped by technological innovations, social changes and global trends, a world in which more sustainable, ethical and user-centered designs will be at the forefront is predicted in the future. Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Art, history, nature, technology, cultural heritage, museums, exhibitions and many more - sources of inspiration and creative processes help designers create innovative and effective designs and maximize their creative potential.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Turkey, in Istanbul. Yes, I think it does. The pros and cons of designing in Turkey balance the opportunities and challenges designers face. While cultural heritage and geographical diversity add originality and depth to your designs, economic and technological constraints can limit your creativity. Therefore, we designers must adopt a balanced approach by preserving local values and following global trends.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My design process starts from research and analysis, conceptual design, elaboration, implementation and launch. Each stage is critical to the successful delivery of my designs. Careful planning, effective communication and continuous feedback at every step of my design process are essential to achieve high quality results.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
The design world is changing rapidly; new techniques, tools and trends are constantly emerging. Be open to continuous learning and development. Develop your own design style and aesthetic. This will set you apart from other designers and build your personal brand.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Being a designer has both positive and negative aspects. Positive aspects such as creativity and freedom of expression are often a strong motivator in choosing a profession. However, challenges such as time management, criticism and financial uncertainties are also obstacles that designers may face. Managing this balance and dealing with professional challenges is important for a successful career.
What skills are most important for a designer?
A successful designer should possess personal and professional skills as well as technical skills. While personal skills such as creativity, communication, time management and openness to criticism are of great importance in the design process, technical skills directly affect the quality and effectiveness of the design. Developing these skills can help a designer succeed in their career and produce effective projects.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
In general, it can take 8 to 20 weeks to design an object from start to finish, but this varies depending on the complexity of the project, the scope of the design, the tools used, the client requirements and the experience of the designer. More complex and detailed projects can take more time, while simple and more straightforward designs can be completed in less time.
Who are some of your clients?
We have made many designs for many well-known and well-known users, including heads of state.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
We design with 4 Architects, 1 Civil Engineer, 2 Interior Architects and my construction, furniture and application team of about 150 people.
How can people contact you?
They can contact me via instagram and email address of our office, our website, our linkedn account, and if they wish, they can contact me by coming to my office.

Extended Interview with Ibrahim Halil TUGBAY

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
My design background dates back to my childhood years. Since those years, the idea of instinctively designing and creating something always excited me. I completed my architecture degree 7 years ago and started my working life by establishing my own office. This year, I completed my master's degree and earned the title of Master Architect. To date, I have been involved in both design and project applications in many countries, especially Türkiye, America, Dubai, Ukraine, and Germany. I mainly designed and implemented luxury mansions, hotels, restaurants, and waterside mansion projects. My team and I make all applications and designs in-house. We have been a big family since the first day with 4 Architects, 1 Civil Engineer, 2 Interior Architects and a construction, furniture and application team of approximately 150 people. We have provided and implemented spaces that we enjoy designing and implementing for many well-known users, including heads of state. For me and my team, design is the embodiment of love in the world.
How did you become a designer?
The idea of creating something and immortalizing your name is, in my opinion, the greatest source of pleasure in this world. Because when the last person who remembers your name dies, you will be considered as never having existed. Design is the most wonderful thing that can be done to immortalize and beautify our world. Because the work you create is passed on from generation to generation, and these areas where many stories will occur may even be the source of motivation for many civilizations.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
It was my childhood dream to be a designer and achieving this dream is an indescribable feeling for me. I think it is impossible to be a designer by force. Because to create something you have to dream and then you have to fall in love with your dream. Only this way a design may emerge as a result.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
We can design anything structurally. But as we said at the beginning, we can generally design and implement many structural things such as villas, hotels, restaurants, luxury buildings, public housing, and waterside residences upon requests from users.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
First of all, they need to love their designs and bring them to life. Because we cannot be successful in anything we do not like. Secondly, a designer both adds and sells a vision to the user. In order to achieve this vision, a designer must analyze both the environment and the world very well and constantly travel and see. It is not the one who reads more but the one who travels more is more knowledgeable. Because it is the traveler who writes what the reader reads.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer is also a good analyst. They respond to analyses and requests. But a great designer creates more unique works by adding his own vision and dreams. A good designer gets acclaimed, but a great designer gets vigorously applauded.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
A good design must first have good functionality. To give an example, imagine that you bought a car with a magnificent design, but it has no engine and does not move. It is of no use to you. Still, it doesn't change the fact that it has a good design. But the most important thing is that the engine works and serves you moreover that the onlookers admire it. In order to call a design a good design, it must be both very original and sustainable.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
We can explain the value of good design with many elements that have very different values even though they are made with the same materials. The originality of the design determines its value. We can see this not only in buildings but in many different areas. The more unique the structure, the rarer it is and what is rare is always valuable. But unfortunately, designs that are far from originality and contain mediocrity are doomed to not be valued. Because there is always another alternative that can be chosen instead.
What is your day to day look like?
If I had time, I would like to design a palace or a religious building that would be the symbol of any country. Because these types of buildings must be both very original and symbolic. This is the only thing that will carry the designer's name to eternity.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
My own house. A Turkish proverb says, 'A tailor cannot sew his own clothes.' Since I was always focused on work, I could not find the opportunity to design the house I dreamed of living in.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
The secret of success in design is to use natural materials that are sustainable and suitable for environmental conditions. Because different uses of a material that they see all the time are always interesting to human beings. I usually compare this to food. You will never crave a meal that you haven't tasted. Although the differences are nice, this is very important in terms of both the sustainability and originality of that design.
What is your biggest design work?
Any design that is different and unique attracts my attention. Whenever I see a unique design, it inspires and helps me create new ideas, and makes me better my designs. As I mentioned above, any design where I see a different use of a material I know is a beautiful design for me and attracts my attention.
Who is your favourite designer?
I think every design of mine is my best design. I can never pick one over another because the work I do is both my childhood dream and my source of life and inspiration today, so I have made all my designs with the same care and desire and will continue to do so. But if I had to choose one, it would be my dream house, which I still haven't built. Because the best design is the one that has not been made yet and the best designer has still not been born. But I know a good designer, I saw him in the mirror this morning.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I believe I am a very good observer. Because looking and seeing are not the same thing. If you want to make a good design, you need to smell not only the reality but also the spirituality of that area. Based on the structures they mainly design I would recommend that they either experience living in that type of buildings or regularly spend time in those areas.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I couldn't live if I wasn't a designer. Because productivity is in my soul.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
No one ever reaches their place alone. Every person is actually a product of a team. In my team, no matter their titles, there are very valuable people.
