Interview with Ufuk Ogul Dülgeroglu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I always wanted to be a designer even since when I was a little kid. I've always found it fascinating how commonplace items are designed to improve user experiences. My inquisitiveness prompted me to experiment with several artistic mediums, such as sculpting, sketching, and material fabrication. After thinking about it, I can say with confidence that pursuing a career in design has been among my most satisfying decisions. It enables me to transform my ideas into tangible objects that have a profound emotional impact on others.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am working as a lead designer at Aselsan. Aselsan is is one of the largest electronics companies in Turkey working mainly on information technologies and defence industry.
What is "design" for you?
Design to me is transforming an idea, a function; to a usable, real product. Creating a bridge between abstract to concrete. Creating an item which is easily understandable and effortlessly used, while still appealing to the eye, being an object of desire.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first product I designed was a modular children's playground equipment. A climbing equipment consisting of roto mold plastics and a metal construction.
When do you feel the most creative?
I feel most creative during the problem-solving stages of a project, when I'm faced with a challenge that requires innovative thinking and outside-the-box solutions. It's during these moments my creativity is ignited, as I explore various perspectives and brainstorm ideas to overcome obstacles.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I try to prioritize usability and efficiency. It's crucial to ensure that the design serves its intended purpose seamlessly, with intuitive navigation and clear functionality.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
When I design, excitement fuels my creativity, igniting a sense of anticipation and enthusiasm. It's thrilling to explore new ideas, experiment with different concepts, and envision the possibilities. Each step of the design process brings a rush of energy as I see my ideas come to life.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Seeing my vision brought to life and positively impacting others fills me with joy and satisfaction. It's incredibly rewarding to witness the tangible results of my hard work and creativity, knowing that I've contributed something meaningful to the world.
What makes a design successful?
A design is successful when it effectively communicates its intended message or function to the audience.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers should use their skills and creativity to make a beneficial impact on the world around them, as they have a significant influence on both society and the environment. Designers may contribute to the creation of a future that is more inclusive, fair, and environmentally sustainable by embracing ethical values, placing a high value on sustainability, and working towards equitable conditions.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Both is required in different kinds of projects. Right now, the products we are working on are mainly huge systems and generally need a lot of people from different fields to be delivered but I did individual design works in the past.
How can people contact you?
They can contact me through Linkedin or via my mail address; ufukoguldulgeroglu@gmail.com
