Interview with Moeko Kakizoe

What is "design" for you?
Design is how we solve problems beautifully. It’s not just about how things look, but how they work and feel in real life.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I enjoy designing products that blend emotion with utility—things people can use daily but that also tell a story or bring joy.
When do you feel the most creative?
I often feel most inspired during my daily walks or while traveling. These moments of movement and change help refresh my mind and spark new ideas.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
It's a mix of excitement and deep concentration. There’s joy in problem-solving and shaping something meaningful from nothing.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers must consider long-term impact and choose sustainable solutions.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was in 2023 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where I showcased an early prototype of the Jonde Book Cover Bag. I would love to participate in future literary or design events in Europe or Asia.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I often find inspiration while walking or traveling. Everyday moments, such as watching people read on a bench, can spark ideas.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I currently live in Germany, but I’m originally from Japan. I believe my design is shaped by the simplicity and mindfulness rooted in Japanese culture, as well as the sense of functionality and deep responsibility toward sustainability that I learned from living in Germany.
What was your most important job experience?
Developing my first product from scratch and seeing people actually use it was transformative for me.
Who are some of your clients?
Book lovers, professionals, and even spiritual leaders who resonate with the idea of mindful, elegant living.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Just a note of gratitude — thank you for taking the time to explore my work and design philosophy.
