Interview with Duc Nguyen Vu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I grew up in an environment that balanced economic success with handcrafted product manufacturing. The thought of creating a new product and bringing it to market was constantly on my mind. This factor naturally led me to become a designer rather than an artist.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My company is Vuong Tam Loc JSC Company, specializing in Kimono garment manufacturing for many long-established and major clients in Japan. Within the company, Vooc Design Studio plays a key role in developing new markets by focusing on research and development of new products.
What is "design" for you?
For me, “design” is a balance between passion, personal talent, and market demand.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
From what I’ve learned, the most exciting designs often balance creativity, functionality, and emotional impact.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favorite design is the house my father designed, where I live and work with my family. It is a perfect blend of family living space, production area, and greenery, including fruit trees, a garden for various bird species, and squirrels. In Vietnam, this kind of balance is rare, especially in major cities, where such harmony between living, working, and nature is almost nonexistent.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
My favorite materials are bamboo, carbon fiber, and titanium. When designing products based on these materials, I thoroughly research their mechanical properties and explore optimal manufacturing techniques to highlight their aesthetic qualities. I skillfully integrate semi-handcrafted production techniques, such as CNC machining, 3D printing, and resin-based shaping for carbon fiber, bamboo, and wood using epoxy adhesives.
When do you feel the most creative?
Once I have gathered sufficient design data and thoroughly researched existing technological foundations, I begin to explore creativity in a structured way, allowing endless ideas to flow from within.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The standout impression at first glance and customer satisfaction during product use are key factors for me. I don’t just design concepts. I find true happiness in bringing designs to life through existing processes and technology. If a project requires advancing techniques or upgrading technological foundations to meet new design demands, I am always ready to take on the challenge.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I always feel happy when I realize the need to design a new product. One of my advantages is that I am not overly constrained by client demands. I have a production workshop, a distribution store, and endless marketing ideas. Throughout the design process, a relaxed atmosphere always plays a key role, allowing creativity to flow freely.
What makes a design successful?
In my opinion, it is the bridge between customer satisfaction and the designer's passion for their work.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
For me, a good design typically meets the needs of the target customer group it is intended for, considering both the spatial and temporal context in which it is introduced. The details and colors are carefully selected, avoiding material waste and minimizing production costs.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I personally do not advocate for excessive consumption; I am a strong believer in sustainability. In my mind, I always strive to create reliable products with a long lifespan and reasonable costs.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The field of design is inherently limitless, depending on each market. In my opinion, globalization and the balanced development of technology will create a leap forward for many new studios. Local consumers have a growing desire for customization and personalization, which will pose a significant challenge for global brands but also present a great opportunity for many local designers.
