Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
As Kemal Cevahir Terzioğlu, the founder of Ray Yacht Design, I have always had a passion for the sea and engineering. This passion evolved into yacht design as I discovered how much I enjoy blending aesthetics with function. From an early age, I envisioned myself creating vessels that move beautifully and perform efficiently.

Ray Yacht Design is a design studio based in Istanbul, focusing on innovative and sustainable yacht designs. Our mission is to create vessels that reflect elegance, functionality, and environmental responsibility.
What is "design" for you?
For Ray Yacht Design, design is about crafting vessels that not only meet functional requirements but also provide comfort, luxury, and a strong connection to the sea. It's a blend of art and engineering aimed at enhancing the maritime experience.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Ray Yacht Design specializes in yacht and marine vessel design. We enjoy designing innovative yachts that integrate technology with user-centered comfort. Crafting unique marine experiences excites us most.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
One of our favorite projects is the R65 Hybrid Trawler. It reflects our philosophy of strength, sustainability, and refined comfort. The panoramic windows, spacious flybridge, and hybrid propulsion system make it a standout design.
When do you feel the most creative?
Creativity likely peaks during the conceptual phase of design, where innovative ideas are explored to enhance functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability in yacht design.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The focus is on optimizing layout for maximum space utilization, ensuring comfort, and integrating sustainable technologies to enhance the overall maritime experience.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
We feel a deep sense of excitement and curiosity. Each design presents a new challenge and opportunity to innovate. Especially when creating vessels that offer both luxury and sustainability, contributing positively to the marine environment.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
There is no better feeling than seeing a design come to life. We feel proud, humbled, and inspired to do more.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design seamlessly combines functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, meeting the needs of users while minimizing environmental impact.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
We consider functionality, aesthetic balance, and how well the design solves a problem. It should feel intuitive and meaningful.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers have a responsibility to create solutions that not only meet user needs but also contribute positively to society and the environment, promoting sustainability and innovation.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is moving towards sustainability, AI integration, and user-centered innovation. We see the future being more collaborative and eco-conscious.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Inspiration is drawn from the sea, technological advancements, and a commitment to sustainability, all of which inform the design process and creative direction.
How do you work with companies?
We collaborate closely with clients, understanding their needs and translating their vision into innovative, functional yacht designs.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
We begin with research and sketches, followed by 3D modeling and refinement. Feedback loops with the client are essential to our process.

Be curious, stay humble, and don’t fear failure. Always design with purpose, and never stop learning.

What is your "golden rule" in design?
Design with empathy and intent. Every detail must serve a purpose.
What skills are most important for a designer?

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
We plan thoroughly and break tasks into manageable stages. Good teamwork and time-blocking help us stay on track.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on the scale. A yacht design might take several months from concept to final drawings.

How did you become a designer?
As Kemal Cevahir Terzioğlu, the founder of Ray Yacht Design, I became a designer through a natural fusion of my love for the sea and aesthetics. From an early age, I was fascinated by design and functionality, which led me to pursue a career where I could bring those elements together. My education and hands-on experience helped me shape this path.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
At Ray Yacht Design, the top priorities are sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics. The team utilizes modern technologies to maximize user experience, blending innovative solutions with elegant design.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?

Young designers are encouraged to keep learning, stay updated with industry developments, and gain hands-on experience. Building relationships with mentors is also key for professional growth. Mistakes are part of growth. We encourage them to stay passionate, seek mentorship, and always be curious about how things work and how they can be improved.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
To be successful, one must remain original, design with user needs in mind, and consider sustainability as a core value. Being open to interdisciplinary collaboration is also essential. We believe success comes from staying true to your design values and continuously refining your skills.
What is your day to day look like?
The day typically starts by catching up on industry news. This is followed by project work, team meetings, and design evaluations. The workday includes analysis and creative sessions dedicated to enhancing ongoing designs.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Keeping up with trends is important to stay informed. We stay informed about design trends to understand the changing landscape, but we always prioritize timeless solutions over temporary styles. Trends can inspire, but they shouldn’t dictate the core of the design.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Good design is one that meets user needs, is aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable. Functionality and innovation are also key evaluation criteria. We look for intuitive usability, harmony with the environment, and emotional resonance when evaluating our work.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
A design is considered ready when all its objectives are fulfilled and it effectively meets user expectations. However, there is always room for improvement, and designs may be revisited for enhancements in the future.
What is your biggest design work?
Our most impactful work to date is the R65 Hybrid Trawler. We are proud of how it integrates eco-conscious technologies with modern aesthetics and comfort.

Beyond theoretical education, we support them with project development and technical mentorship. These students have successfully brought some of these projects to life. We see this as an investment in the future of maritime design and a way to support a new generation of creative, skilled professionals.

Ray Yacht Design was founded with the aim of merging modern design with functionality to create user-focused yachts. Our approach, which blends aesthetics, engineering, and maritime culture, quickly gained recognition in the industry. As Kemal Cevahir Terzioğlu, the founder of Ray Yacht Design, my interest in yacht design began at a young age. During my university years, I had the opportunity to develop my skills through freelance projects. Throughout this journey, my biggest supporter has been my brother, Özgür Emre Terzioğlu, who has over 20 years of experience in the field and continues to provide professional consultancy to our studio. His guidance and expertise have played a vital role in my career path. My other brother is a naval architect, so you could say a natural affinity for the maritime world runs in the family. Ray Yacht Design was born from the fusion of personal experience and a deep-rooted family passion for the sea. Today, we continue our work as a disciplined and innovative team, contributing to the sector through both design and consultancy services. One of the most valuable aspects of our studio is the way we share our experiences with younger talents around us, almost like a design school. We include them in our projects, helping them grow professionally while growing together. This approach reflects both our internal team dynamic and our vision for investing in the future.
