About Antalya Residental
The Antalya Residence interior reinterprets Mediterranean warmth through refined material harmony and fluid spatial flow. Softly curved seating, custom CNC crafted wood panels, and layered lighting create an atmosphere of calm sophistication. Oak veneers, natural marble, porcelain slabs, and concrete textured finishes evoke a tactile dialogue between warmth and raw materiality. Designed for contemporary living, the space emphasizes emotional comfort, spatial continuity, and timeless elegance while celebrating craftsmanship and natural textures.
This distinguished residential interior by BKM ARCHITECTURE STUDIO/BIKEM ULUDAG exemplifies the contemporary synthesis of material authenticity and spatial refinement that characterizes the most accomplished residential design of the present moment. The composition demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of how domestic space might simultaneously embrace intimacy and grandeur through careful orchestration of scale, material, and light. The designer appears to engage thoughtfully with the modernist tradition of open planning while introducing warmth and tactile richness that tempers any potential austerity, suggesting an evolution beyond minimalism toward a more sensually engaged spatial experience. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the seamless integration of architectural systems, where lighting infrastructure becomes ornamental element and structural necessity transforms into compositional anchor through the central marble column. The chromatic strategy evokes the earth-toned palettes favored in Mediterranean residential traditions while maintaining contemporary freshness through precise material specification and restrained accessorizing. One observes particular sensitivity in the layered lighting approach, where multiple illumination sources create atmospheric depth and functional flexibility simultaneously. The furniture arrangement suggests careful consideration of social dynamics, with seating oriented to facilitate both intimate conversation and broader gathering. Viewers might contemplate how this space negotiates the tension between display and comfort, between the curated aesthetic object and the lived domestic environment, inviting reflection upon what constitutes meaningful dwelling in contemporary life.

Grand Interview about Antalya Residental
The CNC-carved wood panels in Antalya Residential were designed not as decorative features, but as an integral part of the spatial experience. Our goal was not simply to create a surface treatment, but to introduce depth, rhythm, and a subtle dialogue with light throughout the space. As daylight moves across the interior, the panels create changing patterns of shadow and texture, adding warmth and character to the environment. At the same time, they work in harmony with the natural stone and wood finishes, reinforcing the project’s cohesive material language. Ultimately, these elements became more than a design detail; they became a medium through which light, materiality, and craftsmanship come together. In doing so, they support Antalya Residential’s core ambition: creating a living environment that is sophisticated yet human, calm yet full of character.
For BKM Architecture Studio, warm minimalism is not about reducing elements, but about emphasizing what truly adds value. In Antalya Residential, we sought to create warmth not through decorative features, but through light, materiality, texture, and proportion. Every element was carefully selected to enhance the users’ comfort, well-being, and emotional connection with the space, shaping a meaningful living experience. We interpreted the Mediterranean influence not as a style, but as a way of living. Rather than reproducing familiar cultural symbols or decorative references, we focused on the qualities that define Mediterranean life: abundant natural light, natural materials, a strong visual connection to the sea, and a spatial continuity that softens the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This approach allowed us to create a calm and balanced atmosphere where residents can maintain a constant connection with both nature and the unique landscape of the region. For us, regional identity is not something that should be displayed, but something that should be felt. Antalya Residential aims to establish a meaningful connection with its location through spatial experience, material authenticity, and a timeless design approach, rather than through direct cultural references.
Research played a fundamental role in shaping Antalya Residential. During the concept development phase, we evaluated not only the impact of natural materials, but also the influence of natural daylight, sea views, and spatial flow on users’ emotional perception, comfort, and overall well-being. Our goal was to go beyond aesthetic decision-making and better understand how people experience and connect with the spaces they inhabit.Materials such as natural stone, wood, and textiles were selected not only for their visual qualities, but also for their ability to foster a sense of belonging, calmness, and emotional connection. The spatial organization was developed with the same philosophy. Social areas were designed to encourage openness and interaction, while private spaces were carefully arranged to provide a gradual transition into calmer and more intimate environments. This approach created a balanced living experience where residents can both come together and retreat into their own personal spaces when needed. Antalya Residential reflects our belief that successful residential design should be shaped not only by aesthetics, but also by how people feel within a space. We believe the future of residential design will increasingly focus on human-centered approaches that respond not only to physical needs, but also to emotional well-being and quality of life. This project is the result of a design philosophy that seeks a meaningful balance between aesthetics, spatial experience, and well-being.
Receiving the Silver A’ Design Award is more than an honor for us; it is a meaningful validation that our design philosophy resonates on an international level. When designing Antalya Residential, our intention was to interpret the Mediterranean way of living not through symbols or direct references, but through light, materiality, spatial flow, and lived experience. We believe the project reflects the spirit of Antalya through natural daylight, sea views, authentic materials, and a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces. These qualities are not only rooted in a specific geography, but also respond to universal human needs. As a result, while the project draws inspiration from its local context, it is also capable of creating an emotional connection with people from different parts of the world. In our view, the greatest strength of contemporary Turkish residential design lies in its ability to express identity not through decorative elements, but through spatial quality, material honesty, and the experience of living. Antalya Residential embodies this approach by offering a timeless, human-centered way of living that interprets the spirit of its location without imitating it, while remaining relevant to an international audience.
One of the greatest challenges during the design process of Antalya Residential was maintaining a strong connection to the sea while developing a clear and functional spatial organization. As we refined the relationships between the living areas, kitchen, guest spaces, and everyday circulation, we realized that some design decisions were improving functionality but gradually weakening the visual connection to the view. This realization led us to reconsider the project from a broader perspective. For us, the sea view was never simply a backdrop; it was an essential part of the living experience. We therefore revisited the spatial layout to ensure that, while creating distinct zones for different activities and levels of privacy, users could still maintain a meaningful visual relationship with the sea from multiple areas throughout the home. Whether together in shared spaces or spending time independently, residents would remain connected to the landscape that defines the character of the project. This process also clarified our interpretation of Mediterranean identity. Rather than relying on familiar visual references, color palettes, arches, or decorative clichés, we focused on the qualities that make Mediterranean living unique: openness, spatial freedom, and a continuous connection to the surrounding environment. Ultimately, the final identity of Antalya Residential was shaped not by symbolic references, but by the relationship between spatial flow, everyday comfort, and the connection between people and their surroundings. This challenge became one of the most defining moments of the project and helped establish its contemporary yet deeply contextual character.
The powerful daylight conditions of Lara became the starting point of our lighting strategy. Our intention was not to compete with daylight, but to extend the atmosphere it creates after sunset. The warm Mediterranean light, together with the constantly changing shadows it casts throughout the day, became an important reference for our artificial lighting concept. For this reason, we approached lighting not simply as a source of illumination, but as a layer that supports the natural atmosphere of the space. Our goal was to preserve the sense of warmth, calmness, and balance created by daylight, allowing it to continue into the evening hours. For us, light is more than a functional element; it is a design tool that creates a connection between architecture and emotion while enriching the overall living experience.
Antalya Residential reinforced our belief that the quality of a living environment is defined not only by the individual spaces it contains, but by the relationships established between them. Throughout the design process, we had the opportunity to further explore how user needs, lifestyle patterns, privacy expectations, and social interactions influence spatial organization. The project demonstrated that spatial flow is not merely a circulation route connecting functions; it is one of the fundamental tools that supports the way people live. The balance between social areas, private zones, and the connection to the surrounding views became a key factor in shaping the overall quality of life within the project. This experience reaffirmed our belief that future design decisions should be evaluated not only through aesthetic and functional criteria, but also through a deeper understanding of users’ needs, expectations, and living standards.
At Antalya Residential, it was not a particular material combination that became meaningful, but the quiet harmony established between materials. Throughout the design process, we deliberately avoided allowing any single material to dominate the space. Natural stone, oak surfaces, soft textiles, and custom-crafted details were not treated as individual statements, but as parts of a shared atmosphere. As a result, the identity of the project is defined not by a material, but by the balance and dialogue established between them. For us, luxury is not expressed through the prominence of materials, but through the feeling they create together. The character of Antalya Residential emerged from this approach: a material language that does not seek immediate attention, yet reveals its value gradually through everyday living. Ultimately, the project demonstrates that sophistication can be achieved not through contrast or excess, but through restraint, harmony, and a carefully curated relationship between materials.
In Mediterranean living culture, people tend to prefer environments where family members can spend time together, remain visually connected, and still have the ability to retreat into their own personal spaces when needed. The spatial organization of Antalya Residential was shaped around this understanding. Rather than defining the residence through enclosed rooms and rigid boundaries, we developed a flexible spatial framework that encourages continuity and interaction. The living room, kitchen, and dining areas were designed as interconnected spaces that flow into one another, while still allowing different levels of privacy and personalization when required. This approach created a living environment that can both open up and become more intimate depending on the needs of its users. Ceiling heights, architectural detailing, and material transitions supported this framework. However, the real design challenge was to create intimacy without sacrificing openness. For us, warmth is not achieved by reducing the scale of a space, but by strengthening the relationships between spaces. The character of Antalya Residential emerged from this balance. By preserving a sense of generosity and spatial continuity, we sought to create a living environment where people can remain connected to one another while still accommodating different needs, routines, and ways of living within the same shared space.
The most important lesson Antalya Residential taught us is that great design is not about adding more, but about discovering what is truly essential. Throughout the project, every decision was evaluated through the relationship between the sea view, natural light, materiality, and the daily experience of its users. Over time, we realized that meaningful spaces are not created by an accumulation of details, but by ensuring that every decision serves the same idea. Our advice to emerging designers would be to think about life before objects. People rarely remember a material, a piece of furniture, or a detail; they remember how a space made them feel. For us, the greatest achievement of Antalya Residential lies in exactly that: creating a living environment that goes beyond visual appeal and becomes a natural, lasting part of the lives of those who inhabit it.
