About Belonging Residential
Belonging is a residential interior design for a family of three generations in Taiwan. The home covers 512 square meters and has a narrow, elongated layout with a low ceiling. Grille elements form the main theme and extend from the first floor to the upper floors. The grilles also serve as display units, storage and room dividers. Stained wood veneer parquet and lighting lines follow the same linear pattern. A mirrored ceiling reflects the interior and increases the sense of height. The top floor holds shared entertainment areas and a covered terrace.
Belonging Residential achieves a compelling synthesis of monumental spatial ambition and refined domestic intimacy within a rigorously contemporary residential environment that demonstrates sophisticated understanding of proportion, materiality, and atmospheric orchestration, positioning this interior within the trajectory of twenty-first-century luxury residential design that privileges experiential quality and material authenticity over decorative excess or stylistic nostalgia. The double-height volume establishes immediate spatial grandeur while the carefully calibrated furnishing scale and intimate seating arrangement ensure human comfort remains paramount, this negotiation between the monumental and the domestic reflecting mature design thinking that honors both architectural aspiration and lived experience. The sculptural lighting installation emerges as the conceptual and visual centerpiece of the composition, its cascading organic forms suggesting deliberate departure from rectilinear modernist convention toward a more fluid, biomorphic design vocabulary that introduces gestural movement and lyrical grace into the geometric rigor of the architectural envelope, these luminous elements functioning simultaneously as functional illumination, sculptural art object, and spatial definer that orchestrates vertical circulation of the eye while anchoring the compositional hierarchy through concentrated visual density and metallic luminosity. The material palette demonstrates discerning restraint and sophisticated tonal sensitivity, the extensive deployment of book-matched marble establishing geological drama and natural pattern as primary decorative strategy, this monumental stone surface requiring no additional embellishment beyond its inherent veining patterns which create mirror-image symmetries that suggest both natural formation and deliberate artistic composition. The chromatic strategy builds upon a foundation of warm and cool grays that create subtle temperature fluctuations across the neutral spectrum, avoiding monotony through careful calibration of undertone and finish quality, while strategic cobalt blue accents introduced through textile pattern and floral arrangement provide chromatic vitality and visual refresh without disrupting the essential serenity of the tonal composition, these saturated blue notes functioning as measured counterpoint to the metallic warmth of champagne gold fixtures and the cool neutrality of gray-toned surfaces. The spatial transparency achieved through extensive mirror application and semi-transparent partitions creates layered depth perception and visual complexity that rewards sustained viewing, the reflected and refracted spatial layers suggesting infinite recession while maintaining coherent zone definition, this balance between openness and articulation enabling simultaneous connection and separation between living and dining functions within the unified volume. The furniture selection demonstrates commitment to contemporary design lineage characterized by clean-lined profiles, geometric clarity, and emphasis on comfort through generous proportions and plush upholstery rather than ornamental detail, the pale gray sectional and coordinating armchair establishing welcoming domesticity within the grand architectural setting while maintaining visual lightness through low horizontal profiles that preserve sight lines and spatial flow. The integration of natural elements through fresh floral arrangements introduces organic softness and ephemeral beauty that humanizes the architectural precision and material permanence, these living botanical elements suggesting seasonal change and natural cycles within an environment otherwise characterized by enduring materials and timeless design gestures. The lighting design reveals sophisticated technical understanding, combining decorative sculptural elements with concealed architectural illumination that grazes surfaces to emphasize texture and materiality, the overall luminous effect suggesting diffused natural daylight that creates even, flattering illumination conducive to both social gathering and quiet contemplation, avoiding dramatic shadows or theatrical effects in favor of consistent ambient glow that supports the serene atmospheric register. One might observe how this interior environment constructs a particular vision of contemporary residential luxury that locates value in spatial quality, material authenticity, and atmospheric refinement rather than conspicuous display or stylistic assertion, inviting consideration of how domestic environments shape daily experience through the orchestration of proportion, light, surface, and the carefully calibrated balance between architectural statement and lived comfort that defines truly successful interior design.

- Unique Properties
- This is a house belonging to a family of three generations. The living members include the father, his adult children and his young grandchildren. The house has issues like a narrow and elongated layout and a low ceiling height. The designer takes the extension and connection of grille elements as the spatial theme, combined with stained wood veneer parquet and lighting lines, and uses the mirror material of the ceiling as a symmetric mapping.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This residence encompasses an area of 512 square meters.

- Production Technology
- The linear and continuous wood skin texture, lighting design and mirror material mapping effect of the grille can open the field of view and height of the space in as many aspects as possible, while maximizing the use of natural light in the room, and also enhance the interaction and communication of the family.
- Design Challenge
- The living area needs to be incorporated into the living room, sacrifice, and the rich function of two dining rooms. On this premise, how to construct the open penetration of the space, so that the family of different spaces can still communicate, and ensure the independence of the space function, comfortable moving flow proportion and abundant light use, is a more difficult challenge in this case.
- Project Duration
- The project started in May 2023 and finished in May 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Grille is a common theme element of the whole building, combined with the living habits of different users, and develops into a unique function use in their own private areas, not only the display of the field division and storage function, but also like an organic living body, connecting the daily life of the people and creating a sense of belonging.
- Research
- In addition to living and sleeping functions, social, office, reading and other spaces are planned according to the living situations of the elderly, adults and children. The top floor is another gathering center for the family, equipped with entertainment functions, and extends the outdoor terrace canopy plan to bring natural and casual field situations.
- Inspiration
- The designer uses the linear elements of the grid as a a symbol of generational continuity and expansion of the Eastern family, which grows and connects from the first floor to different floors, and then transforms into the boundaries of display, storage and compartment. Under the reflection of the mirror, it also creates a magnificent and bright sense of space, resolving the visual limitation of the height of the place.
