About Bulp Table Lamp

Bulp is a table lamp designed for desks and other small surfaces. The lamp leans forward, yet stays stable through a weighted base and careful weight distribution. The body is made of solid aluminium, machined by CNC milling and formed from three main parts and a bottom cap, joined with internal threaded fasteners. Surfaces are polished and chrome plated, while colour variants are powder coated. The head is adjustable, so the light can be directed for focused tasks or for softer lighting. A standard E14 bulb is used.

Ömer Tuğrul's Bulp Table Lamp represents a compelling contribution to contemporary lighting design, positioning itself within ongoing dialogues concerning the sculptural potential of functional illumination and the expressive possibilities inherent in reflective metallic materials that have animated industrial design discourse since the mid-twentieth century explorations of material honesty and geometric reduction. The compositional achievement evident in this work resides primarily in its sophisticated resolution of the perennial design challenge of balancing visual dynamism with structural stability, the three stacked volumetric elements creating a cantilevered arrangement that appears simultaneously precarious and perfectly resolved, the offset positioning of the upper illuminated module generating directional energy and visual interest while the proportional relationships between the three primary forms demonstrate careful attention to harmonic ratio and scalar progression. The chromatic sophistication, while operating within a deliberately restrained metallic palette, achieves considerable nuance through the interplay of mirror-finished surfaces that capture and transform ambient light into complex patterns of reflection and refraction, the warm amber illumination emanating from carefully positioned apertures providing calculated thermal contrast against the cool reflective envelope. Technical facility becomes evident in the exceptional surface finish quality, the mirror polish suggesting advanced metalworking techniques and meticulous attention to material preparation and presentation, while the crisp geometric definition of forms combined with subtly radiused corners demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how edge treatment influences both visual perception and tactile experience. The work appears to explore enduring questions concerning the boundary between utilitarian object and sculptural artwork, inviting contemplation of how everyday functional items within domestic environments can transcend mere instrumentality to achieve aesthetic presence and contribute meaningfully to spatial atmosphere and visual culture. Formal choices throughout suggest engagement with modernist principles of material expression and geometric clarity while simultaneously incorporating elements of playful experimentation and unexpected juxtaposition characteristic of more recent design movements, the slightly off-kilter positioning of the lamp module introducing an element of visual surprise within an otherwise rigorously controlled geometric system. The design may reference historical precedents ranging from Bauhaus explorations of primary forms and industrial materials through mid-century Scandinavian and Italian design traditions that elevated everyday objects to the status of design art, while the reflective materiality and geometric precision evoke associations with minimalist sculpture and contemporary architectural form-making. The Bulp Table Lamp ultimately invites viewers to consider how illumination devices function not merely as light sources but as spatial actors that shape environmental atmosphere through both their luminous output and their formal presence, asking us to reflect upon the poetry that can emerge when functional clarity meets sculptural ambition within the intimate scale of domestic furnishing.

Unique Properties
Bulp is an unconventional desk lamp that leans forward yet remains perfectly stable thanks to precise engineering. Its chrome finish, bold geometry, and vivid colors blend industrial energy with modern elegance. Inspired by Bauhaus ideals, its three-part metal body redefines functional minimalism with sculptural clarity. With an adjustable head, Bulp offers both focused illumination and a strong visual identity even when switched off.
Dimensions & Packaging
Product Dimensions: 80 x 160 x 300mm
Box Dimensions 100 x 250 x 350mm

The packaging consists of a two-part system: an inner box and an outer sleeve. The inner box is made of rigid cardboard with a matte laminated finish and a thick, flush-mounted lid. The interior is lined with custom-cut protective foam to securely house each component of the lamp. The outer sleeve is printed in full color and features a high-resolution image of the product on the front, providing visual context while enhancing brand identity. The packaging ensures both visual appeal and impact resistance during transport.

Production Technology
Bulp is precision-manufactured from solid aluminum blocks using advanced cnc milling. The lamp’s body comprises three main machined components and a bottom cap, assembled with internal threaded fasteners to ensure structural rigidity and precise alignment. The surfaces are prepared through polishing and finished with high-gloss chrome plating; color variants use electrostatic powder coating for high durability. The adjustable head is mounted with secure fasteners and allows directional movement. The fixture accommodates a standard E14 bulb.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was to create a visually unbalanced yet structurally stable form that could stand confidently without external supports. Achieving this required precise weight distribution and internal engineering. Initially, the lamp’s body was designed as a single solid piece; however, due to cnc limitations at that length, it was reimagined into a modular structure through a series of physical prototypes. Another challenge was integrating the adjustable lighting head into the rigid metal form without disrupting its geometric clarity. These issues were resolved through iterative development, balancing sculptural aesthetics with mechanical feasibility and user-oriented functionality.
Project Duration
The project started and finished in 2024 in İstanbul
Operation Flow
Bulp stands with unexpected balance, inviting curiosity. The user places it freely on any surface, where it remains stable due to its weighted base. Its adjustable head allows easy control of light direction, perfect for focus or mood lighting. The smooth, flowing form feels engaging to touch, offering both visual and tactile interaction. Even when turned off, it remains a sculptural presence in the room.
Research
The research phase focused on visual balance, material behavior, and user interaction within small-scale lighting. Studies included sculptural geometry, weight distribution, and industrial lighting components. Inspired by Bauhaus principles, the project also aimed to create an iconic form with no existing formal resemblance. An extensive visual and market analysis confirmed the uniqueness of the design direction. In addition to function, the object’s aesthetic and sculptural presence was deeply explored striving for a product that acts as both a light source and a meaningful design statement. The production process, including cnc machining, polishing, and powder coating techniques, was also deeply researched and optimized for precision and finish quality.
Inspiration
Bulp was born from the desire to explore the tension between balance and imbalance how something that looks unstable can, in fact, stand with quiet confidence. The design draws inspiration from industrial materials, particularly the transformation of raw aluminum into a refined object. Influenced by Bauhaus ideals, Bulp seeks to blend mechanical logic with emotional form, creating a product that feels both precise and personal.
