About Butchart Gardens Preschool Kindergarten

Butchart Gardens Preschool is an early education interior located in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The name refers to a Canadian garden, and the design combines Japanese and Italian garden elements. Gardens, castles, trees and stones are translated into shapes suited to children. Wood surfaces and white finishes create a warm and calm setting. Soft arcs form the walls and conceal the existing beams and columns. Partitions were removed and glass was added to improve light and openness. Solid wood, curved metal molds and fiber cement boards were used.

Creep Design's Butchart Gardens Preschool Kindergarten exemplifies a contemporary approach to early childhood educational environments that synthesizes biophilic design principles with thoughtful spatial programming and material sensibility. The project emerges from a tradition of Scandinavian and East Asian educational architecture that prioritizes natural materials, generous volumes, and child-scaled interventions as fundamental to nurturing learning environments. The dramatic sculptural ceiling element, executed in rhythmically applied timber slats that flow in organic undulations across the double-height space, demonstrates exceptional technical accomplishment in translating conceptual ambition into built form, with each plank precisely positioned to maintain the fluid continuity of the curved surface while celebrating the inherent warmth and tactile appeal of natural wood. This ceiling treatment functions simultaneously as acoustic modifier, spatial definer, and experiential landmark, creating a memorable sense of place that young children can identify as uniquely theirs. The chromatic strategy reveals sophisticated restraint, allowing the natural variation within the timber palette to provide visual richness while maintaining a calming, focused atmosphere conducive to learning and exploration. The generous rounded aperture connecting primary and secondary spaces invites visual permeability and spatial curiosity, its softened geometry echoing the playful curves above while suggesting the openness and transparency valued in progressive educational philosophies. Furniture selections demonstrate careful attention to ergonomic appropriateness and delightful detail, with animal-ear chair backs introducing moments of whimsy without compromising the overall spatial refinement. The viewer is invited to consider how architectural environments shape early experiences of learning, community, and wonder, and how such thoughtful design investments in childhood spaces might resonate throughout a lifetime of spatial consciousness.

Design Challenge
Due to the needs of children’s height, activity habits, and safe teaching environment, the design requires more subtle observation and thinking. In order to integrate the interior with nature in the planning spaces, and by the restrictions of moving off the external building’s wall, the interior space design has been more carefully considered the light and penetration.

Operation Flow
The original design space was full of oppressive beams and columns in the indoor space of Taiwan's multi-houses. We used arcs to modify the oppressive beams and columns, bringing it into the Italian court feeling. Remove all compartments and use glass to increase the sense of space. The method combines natural caves, trees, and rocks with children's activities.
Research
Butchart Gardens is a combination of design elements from the natural ecology of Japanese and Italian gardens. The design is according with the restrictions of children's teaching environment, taking children's safety, activities, and teaching into consideration, and cooperates with wooden work and mud-making arc technology to create a wonderful garden for children, allowing the over-standardized early education environment in Taiwan transform into a comfort and outdoor living nature.
Inspiration
The name comes from a Canadian landscape design called Butchart Gardens, it mixed up the Japanese and Italian styles of elements, hoping to create a beautiful space for children to grow up, from garden castles, trees and stones through the design method, using concretization enters the educational space for children.
