About Cest Lavie Villa Residential
Cest Lavie Villa is a residential interior design located in Jinjiang District, Chengdu, China. The interior covers 478 square meters. The design joins Chinese and Western references under the theme of boundless light. Local elements such as the texture of Shu Embroidery and the colors of Sichuan Opera masks meet a contemporary French style. Floor-to-ceiling windows open the boundaries between rooms and admit natural light. Multifunctional private areas suit different living scenarios. Art installations and wall paintings are made with aged pigments and recycled materials.
Mto & LARGE's Cest Lavie Villa Residential exemplifies the sophisticated convergence of sculptural architecture and curated material sensibility that characterizes the most accomplished contemporary residential design. The composition invites consideration of how vertical domestic space can transcend mere functional organization to become experiential choreography, where the act of ascending becomes performance and the interplay of solid and void establishes rhythmic dialogue between floors. The designers appear to have drawn upon traditions of monumental interior architecture while maintaining intimate human scale through careful proportioning of elements and strategic placement of furnishings that ground the expansive volume. Technical achievement manifests in the seemingly effortless suspension of cantilevered stair treads, the seamless integration of reflective ceiling surfaces that amplify spatial perception, and the refined detailing of metal handrails whose warm bronze patina introduces craft presence within an otherwise pristine material vocabulary. The chromatic strategy demonstrates restraint and intentionality, with the neutral travertine envelope serving as canvas for carefully orchestrated moments of chromatic intensity—the commanding red serpentine sofa functions as gravitational anchor, while the impressionistic area rug introduces painterly softness beneath the crystalline coffee table. Thematic resonance emerges through the symbolic juxtaposition of architectural permanence and human transience, the figure in white ascending suggesting passage, transformation, and the elevation of daily domestic ritual to aesthetic experience. One might observe how the mirrored ceiling creates infinite regression, potentially evoking contemplation of spatial boundlessness within contained domestic realm. What relationship between shelter and aspiration does this ascending interior propose?

- Unique Properties
- Compared with designs of the same type, this project has three advantages. First, Chinese and Western cultures integrate through the aesthetics of material forms and natural light. Second, it absorbs the local cultural atmosphere and forms a unique park-city lifestyle scene that conforms to the project's positioning. Third, it adopts environmentally friendly materials to further refine the production of installation materials.
- Dimensions & Packaging

- Production Technology
- The project emphasizes environmental protection in material use. Art installations and wall paintings were crafted using aged pigments and recycled waste materials. Environmentally friendly materials were applied in the production of installation elements. The design effect relies on the interplay of material properties and natural light rather than special technologies.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was introducing a high-risk eclectic style into China's real estate market while meeting a tight schedule for remote construction. Implementation of art installations faced technical difficulties, and wall paintings raised differing interpretations among stakeholders. These were overcome through close collaboration, timely communication, and the designer's personal revisions using aged pigments and recycled materials.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2025 and finished in August 2025 in China.
- Operation Flow
- The space operates as a poetic residence where light shapes atmosphere and guides movement. Floor-to-ceiling windows erase boundaries, creating openness, while multifunctional areas adapt to different living scenarios. Users interact with shifting light, textures, and cultural references, experiencing an immersive blend of art and life that enhances both function and emotional resonance.
- Research
- This project is located in Jinjiang District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. As an emerging commercial city, Chengdu also boasts profound local cultural heritage. The project integrates the texture of Shu Embroidery stitches and the color relationships of Sichuan Opera Face-Changing masks, and combines them with the theme of "Boundless Light" to present itself through contemporary artistic approaches.
- Inspiration
- Drawing inspiration from the integration of Chengdu's local culture and international aesthetics, this design extracts local elements such as Shu Embroidery and the color palettes of Sichuan Opera Face-Changing. It uses the element of light to adorn the shape of the interior space and its decorations, ultimately presenting an eclectic style infused with contemporary French romance.
