About Chu Yan Restaurant
Chu Yan is a restaurant interior located at Shiliupu Wharf on the Bund in Shanghai, China. The space covers 2500 square meters and is arranged into individual guest areas, private rooms and a waiting area. A large LED wall at the entrance shows a live view of the Huangpu River. Artificial marble, insulating glass and laminated glass are used to reduce weight, block noise and save energy. Sound-absorbing panels and coatings further limit noise. An unfolded scroll image on the corridor ceiling connects the whole design.
This remarkable interior design by Bo Chen achieves a synthesis of contemplative spatial experience and theatrical architectural gesture that positions the work within contemporary hospitality design's most ambitious explorations of atmosphere and meaning. The installation appears to engage with long-standing traditions of using water symbolism within dining contexts while reimagining such references through contemporary material innovation and lighting technology. The designer demonstrates exceptional command of chromatic psychology, deploying the juxtaposition of warm amber tones associated with hearth, comfort, and traditional gathering against cool cerulean blues that evoke vastness, depth, and transcendence. This thermal contrast creates a sensory journey within a single visual field, inviting guests from the familiar warmth of the screened dining area toward the sublime encounter with the luminous installation. The geometric wooden lattice ceiling references traditional architectural vocabularies, perhaps evoking classical screen work and pavilion construction, yet rendered with contemporary precision that honors heritage while refusing mere replication. The incorporation of a human figure within the composition, whether actual visitor or deliberate staging, provides essential scale reference that transforms what might otherwise register as decorative surface into genuinely sublime spatial experience. The reflective floor plane demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how mirrored surfaces can expand perceived space while creating contemplative doubling that encourages meditative awareness. Throughout, the design balances theatrical spectacle with spatial intelligence, ensuring that dramatic gesture serves experiential purpose rather than mere visual impact. The work invites consideration of how contemporary hospitality spaces might offer guests not merely sustenance but genuine encounters with beauty, moments of transcendence within daily life. How might such environments transform our relationship to the rituals of gathering and dining?

- Production Technology
- At the entrance, a large LED wall shows the view of the Huangpu River in real-time. Taken the elevator to each floor, the functional areas as individual guest areas, private rooms, and the waiting area come into being. The tough lines and the marble wall complement each other, and various art decorations and murals can also be seen everywhere.
- Design Challenge
- The transformation and renovation are carried out based on the original building structure. In the lobby on the ground floor, various Chinese beams in the original building have brought great restrictions to design. For the beam that is too low, the design team uses a new type of corrugated material on the top surface to solve the problem of the insufficient height of the entire floor. Horizontally, natural gray and wood-grain marble are used to decorate the wall to extend the vision. Finally, the overall effect of the space is like an unfolded Chinese scroll.
- Project Duration
- The project was designed in April 2018 and finished in July 2019 in Shanghai, China.
- Operation Flow
- Artificial marble is adopted in the project, which is more environmentally friendly, lighter, and easier to install and use than marble. What's more, insulating glass and laminated glass are used to block noise and transmit light, which can cooperate with indoor air conditioning to save energy. Various sound-absorbing panels and sound-absorbing coatings are applied to decorate the room and reduce noise.
- Research
- It is not only a restaurant but also a spiritual space, which brings together the publicity, education, and multiple functions of Chinese catering culture. The overall design is connected by the image of the unfolded scroll on the ceiling of the corridor, which is a very typical Chinese impression.
- Inspiration
- The restaurant design is inspired by a banquet poem in the Book of Songs, which describes the scene where people have a great dinner time. The designers intend to create a space where diners can chat and dine happily. A scene-based method is used to complete the design of Chu Yan Restaurant.
